I have no idea what Jerry Narron was doing with EdE this season, but I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt that for whatever reason he was waiting until he was absolutely sure he was ready, and his confidence now seems (legitimately) restored in EdE. I think he really has the potential to tear things up the rest of the season and he's going to be on unusually rested legs to do it. Aurilia, meanwhile, is great to have as a pinch hitter and I think it might be a stretch to say he'll be complaining, not with how much he's played this season, not with how well the team's doing.

Narron likes the vets, no doubt. But for whatever reason his caution in not using EdE for too much of the season may pay off. With as well as Aurilia has been playing, and as well as EdE stands to play, it's a split on the season I'll take. Heck, I wish Narron was this cautious with his pitchers sometimes.

Is Jerry looking at what some of the hitters have done against Carpenter?

Encarnacion is 0 for 5, and he's playing.
Phillips is 1 for 3, and he's playing.
LaRue is 1 for 10, and he's playing.
Aurilia is 1 for five with a HR, and he's not playing
Ross is 3 for 7, and he's not playing.

Of course, that's not many AB. And their defense, current trends, and whether they need a rest or not must be considered, but I bet Carpenter is happy that he gets to face LaRue instead of Ross.

If all else is equal -- which the manager is the best judge of -- I'd not bench both Aurilia AND Ross tonight.

[QUOTE][If they split, it's like the series never happened (standings wise)

Which is a victory for the Cards considering they held the lead heading in. The goal is not for us to play EVEN with the Cards, it's to make up at least 4 games in the loss column. The easiest way to do that is to control the destiny of BOTH teams when we play. The Reds must win 3 of 4 in order for it to be considered a "success." If we split, we avoid disaster and move ahead, but all we've done is decrease our chances of winning the Central.

Chasing the Central is the EASIEST race to follow because we're only looking up at one team. Makes it simple-- therefore, we all follow it.

But I think we all know that winning the WC is much more likely-- and I find them both unlikely to be honest. But We're tied for the WC and 3.5 games in the Central, so it's pretty clear to me which one I should focus on.

Problem is, I'm not sure who to root against. I was rooting for Houston to beat Arizona last weekend, but that would only mean that the Astros close the gap and maybe get hot. Just gotta look at it each day and start over.

In a sense, the Cardinals succeeded by winning game 1 of this series....they'ave assured themselves leaving Cincinnati in 1st place....now it's up to the Reds to make them sweat a little and be right on their tails going into the weekend and then to their place next week.

It seems everyone in the universe realizes Clayton is completely worthless. Newborns, only days old, realize Clayton is worthless.
Except for two people: Royce Clayton and Jerry Narron.
Hopefully soon, Narron will realize this. I know moving Phillips to short is a risky move this time of the year - but part of being an excellent manager is a willingness to take risks when your team needs it.
Your team needs it, Jerry. Big time.

Man, listening to George Grande slob cardinal knob is so annoying.

Does anyone else notice how he says, "There's a strike" for Carpenter as if Carpenter is the home-team pitcher?
He has nicknames for Cardinal players too. "Yadi" and "Prince Albert".
