So we lose a player because of poor management last night? Sad.

Merker's career probably just ended with that. I really hope I'm wrong, because in the event the team makes it to the playoffs, I'd like to have him around.

And does this mean Mercker is done? 3rd trip to the DL this year and all?

Slap hitting, lukewarm fielding 2B's are a dime a dozen - no big loss.

Oh great. Another 35-year old soft tosser who has only struckout 61 batters and allowed 142 hits in 132.1 inning at Louisville.

but there's still the princple of it. wheather Bergolla amounts to anything is irrelavent; all that matters is that Narron's managing 'skills' might have cost the Reds' an asset. a very minor asset, but an asset none the less.

You have to really Hate JN ...in order to blame him for losing Rafael Landestoy of the AAA Louisville Bats.

I mean that is really pushing it to say he was some sort of asset.
Who was he an asset to?
Was he going to fetch a hard throwing pitcher in a trade?
Was he going to fetch anything in a trade?
You already have Olmedo and Harris down there. So he was not going to probably play for the Reds.

Loading the bases in the 14th......taking out EE........ is that not enough to bash on JN about?

Michalak's career numbers in the big league.

8-11 in 53 appearances (18 starts), 156.3 IP, 186 H (ouch), 69 BB (double ouch), 77 K, 4.66 ERA, 1.63 WHIP (triple ouch)

Throw in that the last appearance was in 2002.

Hopefully we get a surprise tonight, because getting lit up shouldn't be a surprise!

Just remember, Joe Mays is in the minors too. And no matter how bad Michalak is, Joe Mays is worse.

how is Bergolla not an asset?

he can steal bases and at minimum has a good defensive reputation and 23 years old.

no matter who the manager is, when you decide it's a good idea to use your next day's starter in relief, especially a rookie who's been struggling, that unto itself is incompetence.

then when you see the extra affect of having to DFA a young player on your roster (i would have went with Burns) as a result is almost a dischargable offense.

to say Narron hasn't just risked one of the Red's assests is the same logic train that says all that was lost in the Ramon Ortiz deal was money.

This would be just another reason why I wish we still had Germano around. I would much rather had him up here than Michalak.

What hasn't been posted on here:

Michalak - 13 quality starts (9 of last 13 starts were quality starts), gone 6 innings in 30 of 35 games, last outing 7IP, O runs, 3H, 2 BB, 5 SO.

"There's only been one game when he wasn't sharp all year," Sweet said. "It's unfortunate he hasn't gotten a shot at the big leagues. His name has come up a couple of times, but it hasn't worked out. He's been the best starter for us all year."

He's earned this shot and if he doesn't start tonight, he should help EZ in a long relief role. Actually, he would have been a help last night!

Yeah, I'm not hating this move or anything. At this point we need another arm and who else could we call up? We all prefer this over retread Mays. And Michalak out for a relief inning or two may be better than a start, although that is what he's been doing in Lou.

There is a reason that at 35 Michalak is pitching in AAA. With all of the troubles our pitching staff has had this season you have to think if the front office had any confidence in him he would have been here sooner.

I've been asking for this guy to get a shot al year, and if he comes in and pitches well, it was about 2 months too late of a call up. Mercker's career is over, I don't know if anyone will pick up Bergolla - whats the use of a .260 batting Triple A guy? The simple fact is, we are running out of options here with this starting pitcher, we just don't have enough.

Why not Phil Dumatrait? They seemed to have wanted a lefty, someone they could relieve with or use to start in a pinch with all the innings that went into the bullpen, and he happens to be a starter who might profile best in the majors as a reliever. Also, he was already on the 40-man, so DFA'ing someone wouldn't have been necessary. Unless they strictly wanted someone for today (and that might be the case, if Dumatrait started a game in the last day or so), this move makes no sense.

I would lay $$$ on it. No sense announcing it until gametime, gotta give him every possible advantage. Of course I would imagine that Philly is sorta expecting it anyhow.

I really don't miss Bergolla. We have a 2B with speed and who hits well in BP. I know everyone wants him to SS, but it won't happen this year, and there are plenty of other players who can come up and pinch run after roster expansion. I think Olmedo or a FA will get a chance at SS next year, even though it makes sense to move BP to SS and RA to 2B

I have watched him for a few years in Indianapolis and he has been terrible. His "fastball" tops out at like 85 he can fool some hitters but over the long haul he will get hit hard, very hard, Jimmy Haynes type hard.

One of the main reasons that Michalak kept getting passed over was because he wasn't on the 40 man roster.

Atleast they were giving an unabashed opinion before he pitched, and not just waiting until afterwords and claiming to be on the "right" side. On both sides really, Goredsgo was on here saying he would be good and he was. We'll see if it's a fluke though. I didn't say anything because I had no idea if he would be good or not so I'm not going call anyone out for being wrong, atleast for one outing.

If Mercker is really done what happens now? Does he straight retire or do they put him on the 60 day DL so they can add someone else to the 40 man roster, and if so who takes his spot on the 40 man roster? If he did retire due to injury does he forfit the rest of his salary coming or does he still get it? The last question really has no relevance to the season I just always wondered about it. Thanks is advance.

What in the he - double "L" happened?

Just wanted to bring this back up for everyone who was screaming about Bergolla's DFA. He cleared waivers and has been assigned to Louisville. It seems the rest of the league does not value him nearly as highly as some on this board.

I think there are quite a few people that tend to really... REALLY overvalue our own prospects. I am glad Bergolla cleared waivers, he will be serviceable in AAA, and maybe will contribute to the big club someday in a utility role. But I think all the people that shat themselves everytime we give up a minor leaguer should probably realise that if we are trading them or even worse, giving up on them by releasing them, they probably dont have a future with the ballclub anyway.

Does that mean all of the other GM's in baseball are as incompetant as Krivsky? ;)

They apparently didn't value Willy too much either.

In my opinion, Bergolla is a little bit overvalued by some here, and that is reasonable because the Reds system has a marked dearth of infield prospects.

I overrate Olmedo for the same reason, coupled with the fact that I think he is a better option than Clayton.

Thankfully, nobody claimed him, and be a good backup infielder for years to come.
