NL Cy Young

It should be an interesting race for the NL Cy Young award. Webb has the clear lead due to his ERA, but a strong run in the last 50 days could make all the difference. The pack (after Webb) is very tight. This isn't "who I think the best pitcher is" but rather who I think will win the award. Here are the contenders, in my order of likelihood:

1.) Webb: 172.1 IP, 13-4, 2.77 ERA, 129 SO, 31 BB
2a.) Penny: 145 IP, 13-5, 3.48 ERA, 109 SO, 35 BB
2b.) Harang: 162.1 IP, 12-7, 3.66 ERA, 154 SO, 46 BB
3.) Zambrano: 162.2 IP, 12-5, 3.54 ERA, 162 SO, 89 BB
4.) Carpenter: 151.1 IP, 10-6, 3.27 ERA, 125 SO, 34 BB
5.) Johnson (FLA): 120.2 IP, 10-6, 2.69, 106 SO, 59 BB

Basically, if Webb keeps it up, it's his. But each of these guys could make a run for it. Hard to believe that it's like that the Cy Young winner won't have more than 18 wins, max.

At the Same time, its hard to believe there are only 6 of 16 teams in the NL that have winning records. The AL pitchers may struggle to get to the 20 win plateau as well with 3 guys leading the league with 14 wins each.

The man who pitches the best from here on out, will win.

Harrang will have a chance if he can get 5 more wins and keep piling up the innings and the Ks. The Reds in the postseason would be the cherry on top of his Cy Young canidacy.

The only thing hurting him IMO is the 7 losses. If he was 12-5 now, instead of 12-7, he'd be sitting pretty for a run at the award.

I'm always reminded whenever we have Cy Young discussions of Danny Jackson in 1988. He all but had the award locked up with a spot on his mantle and everything. Then along came Orel and his 50+ scoreless innings streak and stole in away. :(

This year's Cy Young is still very much up in the air. Like Maine said, it's however grabs it in the next month and a half.

Arroyo didn't falter...The TEAM did...the guy had to stay on the mound to protect his wins and then when he was so stinkin tired to do that he gave the ball to the BP and they lost the game or the bats never came through...Arroyo should have 15 wins this year already.

Probably someone has gotten votes since then but I imagine Pete Schourek was the last real Cy Young canidate the team had. Was it 95 when he had such a great year?

Hmmmm, 95 was the last time we made the play-offs.

Pete Schourek was #2 in 1995. Jose Rijo was #5 in 1993, and #4 in 1991.

I'm so glad we beat the Pirates that year. Drabek had 23 of 24 1st place votes for Cy Young, and Barry Bonds had 23 1st place votes for MVP, the other went to his teammate Bobby Bonilla. Team baseball won those playoffs!

Just looking over that link you provided points out what an incredible post-season the Reds had that year. They defeated the NL CY Young winner in the NLCS and the AL Cy Young winner in the World Series (at least won the game he started). They beat the Pirates with NL MVP Barry Bonds and then the A's with AL MVP Ricky Henderson. Oh yeah, Jim Leyland was also NL manager of the year in 1990 and LaRussa was second in the AL.

Impressive, any way you care to look at it.
