However, using THIS exact same lineup 2 days in a row should be something that extends into many many many days in a row.

I wasn't being sarcastic. I think Rich plays decent SS in that he actually DOES always make the rountine play, has a very solid arm, and is superb at turning the DP. His range is not AS BAD as people say (can anyone point to any batted ball the last several games that Rich didn't get to that Clayton or Castro would?). He positions himself well and is quick with balls off the bat.

And as athletic as he is, I wouldn't call him "seasoned" at second. He is a shortstop. Making the turn at second base is one of the hardest things to do in all infield play. It takes skill, quickness, and a lot of guts. Phillips has the first two. I think he gets a little nervous when the big guys are bearing down on him at second. If he stays at second, he will get better, but to say he is the worst they have ever seen is just ridiculous.

Getting handcuffed by a good pitcher like Carpenter is neither unexpected nor indicative of a problem with your offense. When you can't hit an absolute turd merchant like Weaver, who has a whip over 1.50, that is a serious issue.

Nothing new here. There are quite a few pitchers of Weavers ilk, who give this team trouble. These Reds are a good "power hitting" team. I wouldn't necessarily call them a "good hitting" team. Power hitting teams can get fooled by trash like Weaver throws a lot more than a good hitting team can.

I know absolutely nothing about pitching mechanics. What specific characteristics do these pitchers share?

Multiple arm angles. Offspead junk off an average fastball. Pitch backwards, with a lot of breaking balls that are out of the strike zone a lot. Changes the eye level of the hitters by moving the ball up and down and sometimes effectively wild. Doesn't let the Reds "big swingers" get into a good groove.

Reds batters need to do a better job of working the count and laying off Weaver's junk out of the strike zone.

Get into hitter's counts, don't be afraid to take a walk and give Weaver every opportunity to make a mistake - which he'll do frequently - and then crush the mistake.

Lohse is pitching brilliantly. Hopefully the offense takes advantage of it today.
