I have greatly underestimated Narron's ignorance to this point.

I'm not usually one to criticize the lineup (when I like it, they lose, so I keep my mouth shut), but cripes. I've got to wonder what Dunn, Aurilia, Ross and even EdE think about this.

I'm not being sarcastic when I say that the Pirates have made real strides in the offense department this season. They've got three guys in the middle of their lineup who can hurt you; when's the last time that's happened on a Bucs' squad?

Freddie Sanchez is a right-handed Sean Casey this season--BA driven OB, but he's certainly doing it well: .388 OBP; Bay's the total package; Nady's got some decent pop; Paulino and Bautista are making decent contributions. They're not there just yet, but they're an object lesson for the notion that you can make real strides over the course of the season by dumping fusty vets for good young talent.

I wonder if the reason that Clayton is hitting 2nd (and in the lineup) is due to the fact he's hitting .343 (.395 .441 .836) vs. LH pitchers this year?

Which is better than Phillips and Hatteberg.

Let me ask a serious question--how much can a pitcher improve his value to a ballclub by being competent with the stick, both in terms of bunting and base hits. For example, let's say you have a Harang-type who can't hit running up a 3.50 era? Then you have a Zambrano-type who mashes (comparatively) with a 4.00 era. Is it conceivable the difference in hitting production could overcome the difference in their ERAs?

dsmith421
08-19-2006, 07:08 PM
If there's one thing the last month has proven to me, it's that Ryan Freel, though an outstanding utility man, makes a fine everyday center- or right-fielder. One project this offseason needs to be moving Griffey over, in my opinion. We might save 20-25 runs a year with the Flying Squirrel in center.

We might save 20-25 runs a year with the Flying Squirrel in center.

We might also lose 20-25 runs a year when he decides to take that extra base or plows into another player and injure him or many other things that Freel does that might be loss of time due to injury.

He's the best utility man in the majors. That's where he should be playing. Everywhere.

He's going to do that regardless of where he plays. Also, he's been doing that all year and how many games has he missed due to injury? Ten, fifteen tops?

Hard to play Freel everywhere when there is nowhere to play him but in right.

Edwin and Phillips are set at second and third and even if they are not, Rich makes a good back-up. How many non, everyday players have 17 bombs?

You can spell Griff every now and then with Freel but other than that there are not a lot of options on where to play him.

Freel is a more valuable, "utility player", when you have a lot of injuries. On a team with everyone but the SS being defined, hard to use Freel as a utility guy, especially with Aurillia being here.

What I was attempting to say was that we need him to fill in at several positions and holding him down to one makes him less effective.

You said that we may lose 20 to 25 runs a year when he decides to take the extra base or injure someone. Unless the manager can predict the future, you do not know when or even if that will occur. Who has he ran into this year and injured? How many times has he been hurt taking the extra base? I agree he is valuable because he can move around to different positions but having him at one position does not limit him to playing other positions when need be. It is not like he is going to forget how to play CF or LF or 2B or 3B playing most every day in RF.

I was driving home tonight and happened to pick up Alan Cutler on the pregame show. He was spewing the party line about how Freel is tired and needs a break. From what I have seen so far tonight he looks just fine to me.

Is that because he is tired or because he is in a slump? Tonight he is 2 for 3 with a run scored. If he is so tired, why does he have 2 hits tonight? Are you going to play Hollandsworth in RF against a lefty tonight?

You are going to go through stetches when you are not hitting well. Everyone goes through it. If they did not, guys would be hitting .800. I tell you what, you tell me which games Freel is not going to get a hit in or is going to hurt himself or someone else this year. Maybe Narron can use that info to know when to sit him.

The REDS are 35-6 when scoring 7 or more runs in a game this year.

The REDS have scored 7 or more runs in a game 10 times since the All-Star break... they won each time.

The last time they lost when scoring 7 or more runs in a game was July 6 @ Milwaukee. Lost 8-7 in 10 innings.

For the second time tonight Dunn K's swinging on a pitch that was almost in the Pirates dugout. I remember when Dunn first came up he would hardly ever chase a pitch out of the strikezone, now he does it regularly.

Dunn picked the wrong time to have the worst month of his career.

I'm not saying it's because he is tired. But if he continues on this trend for the the remainder of the year then what do we say? That's a heck of a slump IMO.

And can slumps be caused by one being tired? And I'm not simply suggesting that of Freel but anyone.

Who would have thought after the 1st inning that Maholm would last longer than Milton? With pitching like this, it would be hard to believe the Reds can make the postseason. :(

Believe it or not, I saw this coming after Freel GIDP on a pitch in the dirt to end the first inning. It killed all the momentum.

So what do you do, sit him down for a few days and have Clayton lead off? Dunn is not exactly hitting terrific now either so do you sit him down too?

No one knows why players get into slumps. Can a player get into a slump cause he is tired? It is possible. It is also possible that someone can go into a slump cause he walked under a ladder or faced a certain pitcher or he is going through some personal problems. But what do you say about the guy who starts off the season 1 for 22? He cannot be tired cause he just began the season. If it were as simple as sitting a guy down for a day or so, everyone would do it. I seem to recall a guy back in the 60s and 70s who played a lot like Freel. Very reckless with his body. Always gave it his all and prided himself on playing 162 games a year. He would be in the Hall of Fame right now if he did not have a gambling problem.

Good point. The futility of the bench, and the inherent lack of depth, has really become an increasingly visible weakness as the team grinds it's way through the 'dog days.' Toss in the continued attrition and volatility in the bullpen, and the recent combination of more frequent implosions by the starters, and extended August slumps by 1/2 of the starting 8 in the lineup... and it's little wonder we are headed back towards the wrong side of .500 at the very time that we need to be making our push.

Weathers needs fined for not hitting Paulino. Ridiuclous that he didn't get beaned there for what he did to Freel.

Weathers though is one guy out of this BP we can't afford to lose. ;)

I'm not exactly sure why we're PH'ing for Weathers here. Just let him finish the darned thing.

And I remembering right...

Will Franklin get the win?? After letting them tie it? That would make him 2-1 w/ the REDS... in about 11 games since he joined them?

What if the Reds need Eddie tomorrow? Will he be available since he's now pitching?

I said the same thing to my dad earlier in the game.

OBM... I am your father. ;)

Dude, we may need Weathers tomorrow.

Sadly enough - he's the pitcher of record and will get the win.

Funny how that works out like that! A backdoor win for Mr. Franklin. I think this is only his 10th game in a REDS uniform. 3 decisions is a lot. Some here probably think 3 appearnces is too many for Franklin in 20 games. ;)

Eddie's hurt....

He's leaving.

I really really don't get Narron's bullpen management. He seems more than happy to use our best (best being a relative term) relievers in lost causes or when we're up seven, then we end up with a floating turd like Franklin out there in the ninth.

Does "Baseball Guy" just not see the cause/effect relationship there?

Oh, shoot, this is not good. Everyday Eddie calling everyone to the mound. Shoot.

Guardado is going to have to come out of the game.

Eddie looks done for the rest of the year...

It was a fun few weeks.
