Who would you guess has the higher OBP among these 4?

Griffey
Clayton
Valentin
Hollandsworth
Larue

It's Larue. That's how bad Clayton is! At least Junior and Javy can slug.

I would have guessed Javy. I knew Griffey's was low and Clayton and Hollandsworth are completely worthless so I knew it wasn't either of them.

This is a trick question.

How many of his times on base resulted, not from hits or walks, but from being hit by pitches?

Part of the reason in that LaRue hits 8th. With two outs and any runners on, they walk him or pitch around him because the pitcher is next.

8 HBP and 8 IBB. Hitting 8th in the order has been good to Jason's OBP.

But Clayton's still bad! My point wasn't to praise Larue at all.

But Clayton's still bad!

Is that point really in dispute?

I feel bad for LaRue because he is a gamer who tries is best and plays hard.
This season for him is probably shot but I'd be willing to bet that he'll bounce back and be productive again. Maybe not with the Reds but somewhere.

Jr's OBP is up to .310 after being down to .288, in August it's .370. I'll wager by the end of the season his OBP will be back up to a respectable .350-.360 range
