Isnt Franklin supposed to be the long relief man?

vaticanplum
08-21-2006, 09:27 PM
I have to seriously prepare myself for the possibility that the Reds are going to break my heart this year. All of the jokes, all of the analysis aside, they are so much more capable of doing this in a year like this than the last five combined. My heart is not having a good year.

PuffyPig

I went to the Pirate series. I could not help but think that our 1-4 does not compair to their 1-4, which is very very good.

Duffy????????

Jack Wilson??????????????

Sanchez and Bay are good.

Challenge: Find a worse 1-2 than Duffy/Wilson.

Embarrassing performance by the offense. The offense, IMO, deserves some of the blame if/when the Reds fail to make the playoffs for the 3000th straight year.

Reds offense is frustrating. You just have to look at the numbers to see why. Team leads the NL in homers, slugging pct, ops. Second in OBP.

Yet team is 5th in runs (should be higher with best OPS) and 11th in base hits. 10th in BA.

Team gets lots of home runs. Just doesn't get the singles. (About average at doubles, 7th in NL.)

Reds are high in strikeouts (third in league) and lead league in walks.

So Reds' mantra is lots of homers, walks and strikeouts. The Reds are Adam Dunn.

Time for a comeback in this game.

I have a feeling the Oswalt/Michalak matchup is unlikely to go in the Reds favor.

You don't think a grieving Michalak can outduel one of the NL's best?

Duffy????????

Jack Wilson??????????????

Bay for sure.

Nady??????

Challenge: Find a worse 1-2 than Duffy/Wilson.

There is a guy named Sanchez who I believe bat's third. He leads the world in hitting. So their 3,4 hitters have it all over our 3,4 hitters. Wilson and Duffy are a wash to Freel and Clayton.

TheBigLebowski

Wild one in Oakland...TOR was up 8-0 after 2, then OAK cut the lead to 8-7 after 3. OAK now leads 11-10 in the 7th.

True enough, but we get them soon, and I don't want them hot. Furthermore, once we sweep them, they'll be right back within range of the entire remainder of the division. I want some of those west teams to just shrivel up and die already.

There is a guy named Sanchez who I believe bat's third. He leads the world in hitting. So their 3,4 hitters have it all over our 3,4 hitters. Wilson and Duffy are a wash to Freel and Clayton.

That was a huge win to start off the series.

Tomorrow they face a rookie pitcher in Jason Hirsh.
Hirsh stats from his 2 starts: 9.1 IP, 10 Hits, 4 Homeruns, 6 BB, 9 K
They cant let this rookie look good like they have done in the past with other rookie pitchers.

I realize it's just one game, but have we found our closer in Eddie's absence?

Great win!

2 games back and no worse than 2 games up in the Wild Card!

This is fun stuff!

Actually, I hope Narron does what a lot of teams should do - close by committee. If you don't have a Hoffman or a Rivera in your pen, close by situation, just like Narron did tonight. The whole "closer" position is such a construct, and it entertains me to no end how the entire league has bought into it. Schoeneweis was a great call tonight, but he's not a "closer." You mean to tell me you want him in facing 3 righties with a 1 run lead? I know the whole "closer" concept can excuse managers from actually having to manage a bullpen and play situational baseball (which is likely the reason why the position was constructed), but I prefer JN earn his money here and play the right cards at the right time.

This is one thing I like about Ozzie Guillen. he has a pretty much bonafide closer now in Jenks, but he still doesn't stick to rules in the use of his bullpen.

Google and got this TIME article from 1923.

Jewish Ball Player

John McGraw is troubled. The source of his distemper is the fact that there is only one Jewish ball player (Bohne of Cincinnati), to his knowledge, in the major leagues. McGraw craves a Semitic sensation around his Manhattan ballyard. He craves one to the extent of offering, publicly via a newspaper syndicate, $100,000 for a star Semite. He points out that " 50% of the fans are Jewish." These fans have seen many diamonds on their brethren and the inference is that, conversely, they would like to see many of the brethren on the diamonds.

It's amazing that many now say that Narron managed so well based strictly on results. If the Astros had hit 2 out they would have said he stunk. Which would have been unfair as you have to judge the decision based on the facts known prior to the result.

Narron brought in the pitcher who would most likely have successs vs. a LH lineup. It was the right choice no matter what happened.

You make some very good points, but it's tiresome to constantly read gloom and doom as soon as we fall behind by a run or 2.

Some even predicted a series sweep by the Astros when we trailed by 3 runs with 3 innings (and 2 games!!!) left to play.

You'd think some would learn.

Clayton knocks in the winning run for the 2nd time in 3 days. Franklin picks up the win with a quick 8th shut out inning. Aurillia ties it up with the 3 run bomb. Hollingworth extends the inning to give Clayton a chance. SS picks up the save with our more dominating 9th inning of the year. And strikes out the impossible.

And most posters here have expressed the opinion that every one of these players should have been DFA'ed at one time or another.

You'd think some would learn.

If you want some real fun, go to one of the Astro boards.

Now that's some real hootin' and hollerin' going on there!!!!

If I agreed with that, I would not have said what I said. Though I was not talking about your personally and don't believe YOU have ever done anything to turn me away from a game thread.

To be quite frank, many of the regulars in these game threads would be asked to leave my living room in a heartbeat and his NOTHING to do with opinion, its all about attitude.

I have plenty of negative people screaming in my ear all day long. I don't need to hang out with a bunch of Debbie Downers to enjoy my favorite teams baseball game.

As I said, many of you make it no fun, which is why you rarely see me

I don't know you, and rarely post, but...

turn off your laptop.

Turn up the radio and enjoy.

I enjoy the gameposts. I have been a member here for many years. I take a certain amount of offense to your offering.

Have a great day in Maine.

I'm not very good at that kind of stuff. My son, Austin Kearns, will do the honours. Stay tuned.
