I was about to post something like: "Why is Clayton batting 2nd! Why not drill a hole in front of Griffey in the lineup?" Then I did something novel like checking Clayton's splits. He has hit and gotten on base pretty darn well against LHPs. An .839 OPS from Clayton can be a solid asset if he is limited to those situations (and he can keep it up).

Why would you characterize a team as doomed when said team has both the 2006 NL Cy Young winner and MVP (okay, MAYBE Beltran can wrench this away from Pujols, but I don't know)? It's silly. They are not "doomed" at all--they are the odds on favorite to win the NL Central.

Nobody said they were doomed (ok, 1 person did)....I just don't think they're everything that you think they are. They aren't what they were, for sure.

Harang and Arroyo aren't chopped liver....Loshe has, so far, been sparkling...

After Carpenter, there isn't much left to fear when it comes to starting pitchers.

Mulder -- just off the DL....maybe he'll rebound...jury's out.
Suppan -- without run support, he's nothing better than what the Reds have.
Weaver -- unless it's against the Reds, he stinks.
Marquis -- Not bad. Not great.

Same number of pitches for Bronson as Lowry, but no one reached base.

Simply put: so far, the SF offense is doing its job.

I didnt see the point of Ross bunting when Arroyo is hitting after Phillips.
Lowry then pitched around Phillips to get to Arroyo who gave up a second out.

Not to mention the fact that Ross swings a good bat. I'm tellin' ya...Narron couldn't manage his way out of the first level of Pac Man.

I'm not saying the Cards haven't made errors or screw-ups, but they never embarrass themselves in the way this club can.

Hery Jerry, Dusty Baker is on the phone for you. He wants his ability to manage a pitching staff back.

A starting pitcher who's made 113 pitches, gave up 2 hits the previous inning, and is having trouble locating his stuff is done. Period. Yes, the bullpen is still shaky. But as shaky as they are, starters who start innings with 113 pitches behind them in a start in late August don't tend to fare very well either.
