I'm not sure what to think about Aurilla getting the day off...

The Giants fans have been kind to him (applauding his at bats) and I assume he enjoys playing in front of them again...

I would have liked to see him stay in.

He hasn't hit them very good this series.. I'd like him coming in to pinch hit in the late innings verse having Castro pinch hit like yesterday.

hey double play ball

That was not a clear double play. Would have been close at second. And, if he throws to second, the run probably scores from third.

If you want to criticize defense, why was Dunn playing deep in left against slap hitter Vizquel? That bloop would have been caught with proper positioning.

George Foster
08-27-2006, 04:44 PM
Hitting will come and go...but poor defense due to brain lapses is a lack of leadership. No one is accoutable. No one wants to get chewed out by a teammate so you keep up your concentration. There is no one on this team that the other players are "afraid" of. When your "star" is to lazy to run to first...it sends a message....NO LEADERSHIP.

Someone doing what he's doing at the age of 22 (a K per inning pitched, .310 OBA, extremely stingy with the long ball) is an ace. You can say he's too young, but he's putting out ace level numbers right this minute, not years from now.

Picking nits.if it was, his ERA wouldn't be ~4.5 in a pitchers park (kinda similar to a guy that pitched on Friday). To be effective over the course of a season he has to lower the walk rate, it is as simple as that.

A pitcher with a 4.70 ERA is not an ace (yet). He doesn't have particularly good control yet, and gives about 1 HR per 9 innings (not quite stingy yet).

He'll get there, but he's not there yet. And it could be very soon.

Actually, for his career he has given up 1 HR per 9.95 innings.

Falls City Beer

if it was, his ERA wouldn't be ~4.5 in a pitchers park (kinda similar to a guy that pitched on Friday). To be effective over the course of a season he has to lower the walk rate, it is as simple as that.

ERA as you know is a weak indicator of success. His ERA could have as much to do with the weak defenders behind him as it does his walk rate, which is a tad high, but very manageable.

Every important indicator says he's an ace.

Whether or not you bunt he runner over depends entirely on the situation, the score, the hitters etc.

Down 4-0 with the clean up hitter up, you don't bunt.

His resilience has been superb this year....I'd be hoping to get Dunn/Griff a few days off once 9/1 hits. If those two can get some to some level of 'fresh'.... both physical and mental...the other seven simply become bit actors in the stretch run.
