Coming into tonight:
vs the leadoff hitter he had a 1.67 ERA
with 1 out a 5.94 ERA
with 2 outs a 5.36 ERA
Even more stats
with RISP and 2 outs a 12.79 ERA
with RISP an amazing 17.57 ERA. Ouch.
Imagine, a pitcher who gives up more runs with RISP than with the bases empty. Who'd have thunk it?

The Reds need to eat most of his contract. Pay Milton six million and give him his freedom. Or trade him to someone and pay most of his contract. Any contract can be bought out if you pay the player enough money.
The Reds have Milton signed to a contract, with no provision for a buyout, that will pay him $9M next season. There is no way the Reds pay Milton less than that and give him his freedom. Milton wouldn't accept it and the Union wouldn't allow it. Teams can only buy out a players contract if that provision is included in the contract.

That's why I think he's not totally immovable. He's wildly inconsistent, but can crank out quality starts sometimes. He does it often enough to beat most teams #5 starter, and some team's #4.
Would anyone rather have Michalek or Franklin starting? With Claussen's health a question mark, I'm not in a hurry to get rid of Milton until we acquire an upgrade. We simply don't have a body to replace Milton right now.

Milton wouldn't accept it and the Union wouldn't allow it. Teams can only buy out a players contract if that provision is included in the contract.
The Reds certainly can trade Milton and pay the acquiring team less than nine million in cash.
As for the buyout scenario, I know they do it all the time in the NBA. Milton could actually benefit from it -- take six mill from the Reds, maybe get four from some team with a big park. Don't know if it is done in MLB, but a creative deal needs to be put together.
Another ground rule double against Milton. Man.

This teams baserunning night in and night one borders on the absurd.
What compounds that blunder even further is it forces Milton to leadoff next inning, unless he's knocked out of the box while on the mound. Baserunning blunders to end innings are one thing, but when they also handicap you the following inning, it's beyond a disaster.

Not sure if there was really one when he signed here. The Yankees offered him a contract, and DanO couldn't let that piece of gold get away so he upped it.
Steinbrenner probably said "he's all yours," laughed hysterically, and had another playoff run.

In the month of August, Edwin Encarnaion has a 1.056 OPS.
This is only Edwin's third game in the three-hole, but he's been in the cleanup spot for 31 games. While batting cleanup, Edwin has a 1.030 OPS.
Edwin Encarnacion really is the last guy people should be complaining about offensively.

Well, I'm extremely pleased that the game is tied at this point. Milton didn't pitch a good game by any means, but at least the offense showed up and we've still have a chance to win.

Not complaining, just noting that he's had a few tough games and seems off. Sometimes, perhaps for no good reason, a guy has a comfort zone in a particular spot. Dunn seems to do well hitting second, maybe EE needs to be put back at fourth. May not be ideal in terms of lefty/righty, but Freel, Dunn, Griff, EE, Hatt, Aurilia, Ross, Phillips, works for me.

So far this season, Milton with a pitch count of 91+ allows opposing hitters to hit .356/.431/.733, and that's good for a 1.164 OPS.

Oh, I agree with you that he could be moved. I just don't think it will happen untill late next season. Even if he could help a team in contention this season, that team wouldn't want him on their roster for all of '07 unless the Reds ate a bunch of salary. It's not worth it to the Reds, IMO. Polish him up, keep him as healthy as possible, then flip him to a contender next season for prospects. This was a bad contract for the Reds when it was signed and I'm afraid they are stuck with it.
