If this game continues, next time Reds get a slow guy on first like RA, they need to use Deno as a pinch runner. Deno might have scored on Ross' hit. Have to force the action here.

Weathers had only thrown 21 pitches in his 1.2 innings of work prior to this inning. With two quick outs, his pitch count for the relief effort is still low even though he's pushing 3 innings of work.

If he can get out of this inning without any problems, it will be a massive benefit to the bullpen as well as our chances to win tonight. It doesn't get much better than 2.2 late/close scoreless innings with relative ease and not many pitches thrown.

chip if that ball gets to the wall aurillia scores easy...he cut itoff and saved a run

And if someone with some speed was at first they could have scored even if Drew cut the ball off. But you cannot pinch run for everyone who does not posess a lot of speed.

Tony Cloninger
08-30-2006, 01:24 AM
You saw RA and Ross take pitches and work the count........but BP did not......yet BP had done that before in the game.

The difference?.......No runners on...they focus. When runners are on.....the hitters on this team turn into impatient......not very bright hitters.

Good pitching beats good hitting every time. The Dodgers always have a couple of kids from Asia or one from south of the border who stymie the league's hitters and I've often wondered why more teams don't do this. I have watched their staff. All sthrow strikes and have good velocity. It's always been thsi way, so someone or anyone (especially the Reds) should look at this. There is no earthly reason to continue to buy or trade good players for relievers who simply cannot hit the strike zone or throw mid-80's in this league. I can't figure this out.

Reds Fanatic

Weathers with 2 2/3 innings of great relief. His ERA falls below 4.00. I would not have thought that- he had such a horrible stretch in there.

Cyclone792
08-30-2006, 01:27 AM
Final pitch count for Weathers in his 2.2 innings of work is 36 pitches. Also considering the jam he was called on to get out of in addition to retiring eight batters without giving up a run in a tie ballgame, that was an excellent, excellent outing.

The side benefit is the rest of the bullpen is well-rested for however many innings this one may go tonight, and we shouldn't be in bad shape tomorrow night either.

I wish Weathers was Ted Abernathy/Wayne Granger and Scott Sullivan all rolled into 1........beacuse he is the only reliable RP on this team...and seems to have been, minus EG and in small doses SS, for the last few months.

If he could pitch almost every day ....like those 3 guys....then i would feel more confident in going to the bullpen.

Come to think of it.....what kind of bullpen would that be with those 3 guys there? You would only need a 10 man pitching staff really.
