We're going to pick up a win tonight.

Hendrickson strikes nobody out and walks far too many batters. Mix in the fact that our offense is simply due, and I think we'll score some runs tonight. Even with Milton on the mound and his capability of giving up runs hand over fist, I feel confident we can pull out a victory.

Now I just hope that I'm right with this feeling ... :dunno:

I know this sounds weird...but don't we want the Cards to sweep the Marlins?

Right now don't we have a better chance to win the WC than the Central?

As of right now the Phillies are winning big and the Marlins are beating the Cards 5-1 in the 5th.

Not really. We have to better one team to win the Central. We have to better, what, 6 to win the WC. I'll take our odds in the division.

I see a bunch of teams in the NL that are starting to look a whole lot better than the Reds. The Reds really need some high voltage additions in September.

Because right now they look like the same old "2 somewhat effective starters and pray for rain" alignment with a rusty, old and ineffective bullpen as they had back on July 1st.

A great big revolving door of poop.

Right now I root for each of the close wildcard contenders to lose, which at this point includes the Padres, Phillies, Marlins and Giants.

People get stingy with the hope that we will win the division, but I'm not concerned with the division. There are 162 regular season games to be played with the end reward from those games being one of four teams in each league to make the playoffs, wildcard included.

The absolute goal right now should be to simply make the playoffs. If we make the playoffs via the wildcard, that's fantastic. If we make the playoffs and win the division, that's fantastic.

Just make the playoffs; how we make it is immaterial. Once playoff games start, then other goals arrive, such as reaching the NLCS, winning the NL flag and winning the World Series.

But for now, one step at a time, and right now that step is simply the playoffs.

Slumping teams often have to overcome even favorable matchups. Thus, the feelings of uncertainty.

I give us a 45% chance to win, and I feel that's optimistic

The offense has to show up today. You've got to figure LA will score at least 4 runs this game.

At least I feel as though we have a chance. Yesterday was so depressing to sit through, because I felt the game was an automatic loss before it even started. Only Tomko made it interesting.

Cyclone792

Each of the above teams looks way better than the Reds. (Though the Phillies will discover a way to screw it up).

They're all a mixed bag of pure mediocrity, the Reds included. Hot'n cold streaks mixed in with plain ole luck will determine the NL Wildcard winner. We have as good a shot as the rest of the squads, but at the same time, they've each got as good a shot as we do.

Raise a glass to nice BABIP marks both offensively and defensively, a second glass to a sub 4.00 bullpen ERA, a third glass to sub 3.50 ERAs from Harang and Arroyo, and a fourth glass to a .380 Freel OBP and .900+ OPS marks from Dunn, Griffey and Encarnacion for the month of September.

We're going to need most of the above, if not all of the above.

You guys are unbelievable. Milton is a better pitcher than Hendrickson and this game is far from over...it's one run. This team should score a run per inning against Hendrickson if they just take a few pitches....they need to relax and stop pressing.

I was told when behind homeplate, to look at the outfielders on a flyball. Grande consistantly looks at the ball, which always looks deep off the bat.

Olsen and Johnson can't hit.

This isn't a discussion about pitching staffs. This is a discussion about the total package of an entire team: offense, pitching and fielding put together.

When there's an NL Wildcard team that possesses an entire team better than the rest of the pack enough to make a difference over 30 games, it will be obvious. As of August 29th, it's far from obvious.

BTW, about the only thing separating Harang and Johnson is about 50 points of BABIP. Workload and DIPS markers are eerily similar.

Hopefully he'll do the Reds a favor and not pick up his option.

He will, but the Reds need to buy him out. He has a 5.24 ERA right now and last year was over 6. That is not major league pitching. Maybe it's his knee, whatever, but Castellini/Krivsky can't begin to build a true contender with a pitcher like this throwing every five days.

Just have to chalk this up to a prior regime's mistake and cut him loose. Again, let a young guy like Bailey take Milton's spot next year so there won't be a double salary hit. I'd rather see a kid struggle than watch this for another season.

The Reds need to eat most of his contract. Pay Milton six million and give him his freedom. Or trade him to someone and pay most of his contract. Any contract can be bought out if you pay the player enough money.

For next year, I don't care if the Reds add a single major veteran player. They will be a much better team if they say goodbye to Milton and Larue. Add young inexpensive players to replace them.

Milton is due $9M next season. That's pretty much the definition of immovable.

I'm not saying that it would be easy. But it's certainly possible, especially if the Reds accept no talent in return. If the Reds are willing to eat 2-3 million salary, they could definitely do it.

When you see bidding wars over guys like Byrd, and people like Weaver and Ponson in large market team rotations, Milton could be moved. Again, I'm not claiming it's easy, but it could be done (especially if the Reds eat 2-3 million).

Sad as it is, Milton is an upgrade at the #5 slot to several teams that want to contend.

we can complain about Milton all we want but he will continue to start, the Reds don't even have a replacement for Michalak

Glad we have Eric "the people sitting in the outfield better have body armor" Milton pitching arguably our biggest game all season.

Is there anyway to look up how many runs Milton has given up with 2 outs?
It's horrible I know, but I want stats.
Coming into tonight:

vs the leadoff hitter he had a 1.67 ERA
with 1 out a 5.94 ERA
with 2 outs a 5.36 ERA

Even more stats
with RISP and 2 outs a 12.79 ERA
with RISP an amazing 17.57 ERA. Ouch.

Well, they took care of Michalak by sending him to Sarasota. Maybe Louisville, Chatanooga or Dayton can use Milton.

SD with an early 4-1 lead. This may be the night the Reds will no longer lead for the wild card.

As Randy Travis would say with his 1990 hit..."It's just a matter of time."

Except the Reds will win tonight. ;)

Milton deserves a contract extention.

He has one - all he has to do is to say "yes" to his player option.

:bang:

DanO - the gift that keeps on giving - and the receipt is missing.

I think we've already lost our biggest game of the season. Now it's just time to wait for the crash impact. :(

SD or Florida will pass us within a week.
