Olsen and Johnson are infinitely better than the two essentially six-inning "horses" the Reds trot out in Harang/Arroyo.

As crazy as it sounds, I don't think Milton is immovable this winter. He has one year left on his deal. He's below average, but pitching is so scarce, that I could see a big market team picking him up to be their #4 or #5 starter.

Afterall, Byrd (a lifetime .500 guy) got 2 years at 7 million each as a FA. [I'm pretty sure that's the correct $$]

This isn't a discussion about pitching staffs. This is a discussion about the total package of an entire team: offense, pitching and fielding put together.

When there's an NL Wildcard team that possesses an entire team better than the rest of the pack enough to make a difference over 30 games, it will be obvious. As of August 29th, it's far from obvious.

BTW, about the only thing separating Harang and Johnson is about 50 points of BABIP. Workload and DIPS markers are eerily similar.

He will, but the Reds need to buy him out. He has a 5.24 ERA right now and last year was over 6. That is not major league pitching. Maybe it's his knee, whatever, but Castellini/Krivsky can't begin to build a true contender with a pitcher like this throwing every five days.

Just have to chalk this up to a prior regime's mistake and cut him loose. Again, let a young guy like Bailey take Milton's spot next year so there won't be a double salary hit. I'd rather see a kid struggle than watch this for another season.

The Reds need to eat most of his contract. Pay Milton six million and give him his freedom. Or trade him to someone and pay most of his contract. Any contract can be bought out if you pay the player enough money.

For next year, I don't care if the Reds add a single major veteran player. They will be a much better team if they say goodbye to Milton and Larue. Add young inexpensive players to replace them.

I'm not saying that it would be easy. But it's certainly possible, especially if the Reds accept no talent in return. If the Reds are willing to eat 2-3 million salary, they could definitely do it.

When you see bidding wars over guys like Byrd, and people like Weaver and Ponson in large market team rotations, Milton could be moved. Again, I'm not claiming it's easy, but it could be done (especially if the Reds eat 2-3 million).

Sad as it is, Milton is an upgrade at the #5 slot to several teams that want to contend.
