I think it's safe to say 2 of 3 is a MUST...otherwise, this team has to jump over 4 teams in the Wildcard.

3 is hard enough.

I'm a little afraid of the Harang one concealing an injury.

Interesting comment. I don't know, but I wonder why FCB or anyone else may feel this way. Could be, but what makes FCB say this?

Last 3 starts... 2 quality starts (7IP-1ER ; 7IP-2ER).
> 20IP, 24H, 7ER, 17K, 4BB, 2 HRA.
> 3.15 ERA, 1.40 ERA.

Not bad. Last start was 6IP & 4ER. An injury?

OnBaseMachine

Easy 1-2-3 1st inning for Harang.

Tony Cloninger
09-04-2006, 05:18 PM
FCB always thinks there is an injury when a pitcher has a bad game or 2....after he has pitched well all year, or for most of the year.

I keep telling him.....the days of a pitcher with consistent 7-8 IP, 1-2 ER per game is over.....you are lucky to get that out of 1 or 2 starters on your team.

The Twins with Santana and Liriano earlier this year made it seem like it was 1988. Less than half of the teams in the majors can have pitchers throw this well anymore, IMO.

Maybe because Harang allowed 59 baserunners in 38 innings in August, 6 HRs in the same number of innings, and threw the greatest number of pitches of any month so far this season.

I can't figure out why Reds hitters are so bad when they get ahead 3-1 or 3-0.

Because they are an awful "bat-on-the-ball" club. Griffey's usually one of the better on the team at that, but obviously he's not been himself all season.

Tony Cloninger
09-04-2006, 05:27 PM
I agree with FCB.....they are bad "contact" hitters.....this team needs 1-2 Casey type hitters, but cheaper.

Votto might do the trick......contact hitter, with power and OBP skills.

Maybe because Harang allowed 59 baserunners in 38 innings in August, 6 HRs in the same number of innings, and threw the greatest number of pitches of any month so far this season.

I see. Then perhaps he is tired? He might be hiding an injury, but his last three starts were MLB caliber.

His August WHIP was 3rd best on the REDS staff and only minimally higher than Eric Milton (1.53 WHIP). His WHIP has also gone up every month from May with about the same consistentcy... May = 1.22 ; June = 1.30 ; July = 1.41 ; Aug. = 1.54). Perhaps the hitters have figured him out to a degree or he is tired or he is hurt. I'd lean towards the first two suggestions.

But no one here knows for sure! I hope for the best... for the rest of this year for Harang and in the future. And today wouldn't "hurt" either. :)

Walkin' the 8 man to get to the pitcher is terrible.

One of the best things you can do is get the 8 man for the last out. It means the pitcher has to lead off the next inning and it's like spotting you an out.

Hunter has expressed his dissatisfaction with playing on the unforgiving AstroTurf in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, and I think he is a free agent at the end of the season. If so, I could easily see the Reds seriously going after him.

This team is simply horrible at hitting with men on base. A disaster. Two on and no one out, we get three routine outs. And Rich, being Rich, as well as he's been this year. hit a foul on a pitch he had to reach way outside on and hit the "bloop" on another ball. I go back to something Team Clark said awhile ago. I can't remember the exact quote, but the connotation was that we didn't have the smartest hitting team. I think that inning proves that.

I think he said they were just not that bright period, which I agree with.
