what did Marty get suspended for earlier this year?

:D Rumor has it that Air Supply co-lead singer Russell Hitchcock came down with a case of strep throat and Marty graciously agreed to fill in at their concert scheduled for tomorrow afternoon.

Proof that "God" does rest on the Sabbath...

C'mon, I can't believe I was the first one to say that with Marty being off on a Sunday.

Just to clear up some of the misconceptions rolling around here.

Marty is not THE god...only A god...also take note of the little "g" in "god".

Whie Marty has dapper dandy hair, Russell Hitchcock of Air Supply also had an incredibly high octive range that Marty simply cannot match...so...he will not be performing with Air Supply...for those of you who purchased tickets to see Marty with Air Supply, we're sorry but there will be no refunds.

Thanks

I rthink he's looking for new accomodations.

After all, he told us yesterday that you could "bet the ranch that Gonzalez would pitch the 9th for the Pirates".

The Pirates closer didn't pitch the 9th, presumably because he's been out for a number of weeks, and is actually out for the year.

But Marty is above everything he is teflon. I think after listening to the way Marty called the game last night he should have taken last nights game off as well, he flat out mailed it in last night.

I find it laughable that Marty will be on the golf course.

I've followed the Boston Celtics since the early 80s and Tommy Heinsohn has been doing the games the entire time. He would have some choice words for you if you even suggested he go play golf at the same time as a Celtics game.

Tommy wants to be at the game because he cares. Marty doesn't.

Tommorow is an off day.

He didn't have to do it today.

MaineRed
09-10-2006, 11:11 AM
I'm guessing part of the reason he is doing it today is because he doesn't want to interupt his normal off day schedule.

That and the fact that he probably doesn't want any Reds at his tournament, thus overshadowing him.

I'm sure its for charity but lets be sure to make it all about Marty.

The guy continues to do things no other announcer would do or get away with.

I can't imagine either of the longtime Red Sox radio announcers missing a day because of their golf tournament. They would simply schedule it on an off day, or the day of a night game.

Well, I guess when you're a HoF'er, you can ask for, and have certain things written into your contract, eh? I mean all they can say is NO. IDK if it's right or wrong, but certainly age, status, a history of loyalty and prestige with your profession all bring along certain perqs.

My opinion only: I think Marty is losing his passion for Reds baseball. I've always enjoyed listening to him on the radio; heck I'm 45 and it seems as if I've been gladly listening to him my entire life. But this summer, with his vacations and days off to golf, it does seem as if Marty would rather be somewhere other than at the Reds game.:(

I can't believe the guy is getting bashed for hosting a golf tournament.

The tournament benefits the Cincinnati Reds Community Fund (Webpage (https://secure.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/cin/community/marty_golf_form.jsp)). It's obviously a team-sponsored event. It's held tomorrow (Monday, the Reds' off day) but they have a reception this evening, and I'm sure Marty wants to make sure participants feel like they're getting their money's worth. It's no wonder he's concentrating on the tourney today.

And with groups paying $2,500 to play, I'm sure it raises a ton of funds for charity.

And it's not "all about Marty."

Among those Reds legends scheduled to participate in this year's event include Tom Browning, George Foster, Chris Sabo, Ron Oester, Todd Benzinger, Joe Nuxhall and many more.

And keep in mind. Every time that Marty takes a day off, it means an extra day of broadcasting for Joe Nuxhall. If I were in Marty's shoes and knew many fans were anxious to hear Joe do some games, I wouldn't hesitate to take off the occassional game.

Thanks for setting the record straight; this reminds me again to do some research of my own, and not just trust what I read here.

So, Marty is actually working for the Reds today; just not broadcasting the game.

They are all Reds aren't they?

Maine, I'm usually with you on most topics, but I just don't understand the anger and disgust with Marty B.

Maybe someday when we are 64 years old, and have poured our life into the same job for over 30 years we'll be better able to understand why he does some of the things he does.

They aren't current Reds.

And if the golf outing was today as I was told, you could be sure no current Reds would be there.

If the golf is tommorow, where is Marty today?

There have been plenty of 64 year old broadcasters who have golf outings on Monday off days. I've never heard of one needing Sunday off to prepare.

I happen to work with a 65 year old dude who has been on the job for about 30 years and like Marty he is miserable.

I grew up listening to Marty and will always associate him with the club, but lately, I'm indifferent toward him. He still makes listening to most games enjoyable, but I have become a tad jaded by some comments and his overall attitude toward some topics. But personally, I really don't care if someone likes him or not, but I do feel obligated to defend him here.

Back in high school, I was co-chair of our student council's annual golf scramble. It was one of the most miserable tasks of my life because of the commitment needed to pull it off. The amount of work it took was overwhelming, even with the help of 100 other students.

With that in mind, there is a Sunday welcome reception at Marty's event, according to the website. You would assume that it would begin no later than 7pm, epsecially if there's drinking combined with early tee times the following morning.

1:15pm - Reds game starts
4:15pm - Reds game ends
5:15pm - Marty finishes postgame show
5:45pm - Marty arrives home
6:00pm - Puts on a suit and fixes hair (15 minutes for his hair? yes, a conservative estimate )
7:00pm - Arrives at Grand Victoria

So basically, that's using conservative estimates. Yeah, yeah - he could have his suit at the ballpark or the game could end quickly to save him time... but in the same vain, the game could go 18 innings and traffic could be horrible. Regardless, even if everything worked perfectly, he would be arriving at his OWN EVENT exactly as it begins. He'd have no say in final preparations or decisions.

Now, as pompous as Marty can be, I have a very, very hard timing believing that he wouldn't demand that the event be first-class all the way. The guy who runs the Reds Community Foundation was on Lance McAllister's show not too long ago, and he said that Marty was involved in every decision of the event, right down to the gift bags and silent auction. So I just don't see how Marty could devote everything he needed to the golf event while still trying to broadcast today's game.

And who's to say there won't be current Reds there? I doubt they can announce it ahead of time because players' schedules change all the time. But I'm sure guys who are available and interested would be more than welcome to attend. Do you really think Marty would tell Junior or Dunn they can't come to his tournament? Regardless, you said that he didn't want any of those Reds there so that they don't overshadow him. If that's the case, he wouldn't have all those former Reds there too.

I just don't get what the big deal is.

MaineRed
09-10-2006, 03:38 PM
Again, my comment about there being no Reds there had to do with being told the golf outing was TODAY. It is pretty clear Griffey and Dunn won't be playing golf today.

The tourney being today, when tommorow is an off day, seemed odd. Which is why I questioned it. It made no sense that a Reds related event was being planned for the Sunday before an off day.

Bucky Dent went to Albert Pujols golf outing. I'm sure nobody would mind if he took the day before the outing off, to get ready.

The big deal in my book is that Marty is the announcer for the Reds and that no other announcers do this stuff. If he wants to be a part time announcer, he should let the club know so they can find two new guys for the booth, instead of just one yes man.

Just to clareify some things, there are events spanning both today and tommorow.
From reds.com

The inaugural "Marty Brennaman Golf Classic ... And This One Belongs to the Reds Community Fund" was a rousing success in 2005 and returns in 2006. Hosted by the Reds Hall of Fame broadcaster, the '06 event takes place Sunday and Monday, Sept. 10-11 at Grand Victoria Casino and Resort in Rising Sun, Ind.

The two-day event features a private Sunday night reception, hotel rooms at the Hyatt resort at Grand Victoria and Monday's golf scramble. Celebrity guests include local and national broadcasters and media representatives, as well as former and current players.

A package for four includes the Sunday evening reception, four hotel rooms at the Hyatt resort at Grand Victoria, a fivesome including a celebrity, lunch and golf gear on Monday. $2,500 per foursome; $3,000 per foursome and hole sponsorship; $250 per couple for Sunday reception and one hotel room only.

And keep in mind this is a Reds Community Fund event so it's not as if he's just out goofing off. He's functioning as a representive of the Reds orginiziation to help raise money for a Reds operated charity event.

I don't care if people don't like his style or that he's opinionated, but I don't understand all of the almost conspiricy like things that are bandied about here (he plotted to have Steve fired, he doesn't want any current reds around, etc etc). It's all speculation.

MaineRed
09-10-2006, 11:22 PM
I wasn't going to say anymore on this but I want to clear up a few things.

The only person who said Marty doesn't want any current Reds around was me and that was after being told the golf outing was today. It seemed fishy.

The fact that the Reds had a game today with tommorow being an off day, my first instinct told me that Marty had scheduled it this way on purpose so he wouldn't have to, "waste", an off day on his charity event, full well knowing he would have to do it without the benefit of any current Reds. Knowing now that the outing is tommorow, I was obviously wrong to have that belief.

TeamBoone, I don't recall saying you had any sort of problem with anything. I've just never heard of another announcer taking a day off to prepare to play golf and give a speech, as noble as the cause is (which I don't question).

It doesn't mean I know what every other announcer is doing all the time, I've simply never run across it. If others have, I'd love to hear about it. Just as I'd love to hear what Marty was up to today (according to Steve and Joe). I didn't hear today's game.
