This one has to rate right up there. McGlothlin was a good starter who died too young, Borbon was a mainstay on the Reds great teams. Geishert was included in the deal to get George Foster. All for "bench me or trade me" Chico (who also died too young) and "play in the shade" Alex.

Maybe the numbers lied, as well as the scouts. Remember reading that he was a very highly billed player at one time. Never panned out.

The Reds acquiring Mathewson, Roush, and McKechnie from the Giants for Herzog and Killefer is the only trade in baseball history where three future hall of famers were involved. The three future hall of famers were of course the three guys the Reds got.

The Reds trade on 3/14/32 with Brooklyn netted the Reds Ernie Lombardi. The other great trades which came to mind, including the acquisitions of Mathewson, Roush and McKecknie, the trades for Derringer and for Walters, Bob Howsam's moves that netted at various times Carroll, Borbon, Foster, Tolan, Alex Johnson, and Seaver, and the more recent trades that gave the Reds Rijo, Arroyo, and Phillips have all been mentioned. All were great, but the previously mentioned Lee May, et al, for Joe Morgan, et al, is IMO the greatest trade by the Reds ever. It was an imaginative trade questioned by many Reds fans and the Cincinnati media at the time. Howsam ignored the critics and made a deal that produced a peak Big Red Machine that would win four of the next five NL West titles and two world championships.
