Per Marc's blog:

Though no one has come out and said it, the general assumption around here is that Brandon Phillips probably will be moved to shortstop next season. We'll get our first look at him there tonight.

Denorfia CF
Phillips SS
Aurilia 1B
Dunn LF
Encarnacion 3B
Ross C
Castro 2B

Well now I really don't understand not doing this earlier this year. Why not give it a try when things weren't going well but we still had a chance at the post season?

If he should happen to have the misfortune to make... say two errors there in his first outing, does that mean Narron never writes SS next to his name in the lineup card again? It seems like Jerry's kind of logic.

Wait a minute ...

Is this Phillips at shortstop and Denorfia in center field? In the same game? Is Jerry Narron finally getting it on September 22nd? Well, maybe "getting it" is going a bit too far, but a light bulb in one aspect has gone off nonetheless.

I'm wary about the rain tonight and going down there, but this may have actually persuaded me to head down just to get a great look at Phillips at short and Denorfia in center.

Typical. Couldn't do it 3 months ago, Jerry might as well take the leap of faith now with 10 games left that Phillips can play the same position that he has spent the VAST majority of his career playing. :thumbdown

Good start. Now get Castro off 2B and let Harris play a little.

I agree why bring Harris and not try him you allready know what Castro will bring why not see if Harris can help for 2007

I can actually see why the Reds waited so long to try Phillips at SS.

He was performing well at 2b. It makes sense to let a young player stay where he's successful and gain confidence. Also, there was the pressure of the pennant race.

Now that the Reds are out of the race for sure and he's had nearly a solid year of success, it makes sense to try him there in a no pressure situation.
Sure, they probably should've done this 2 weeks ago, but I definitely can see why they didn't do it in July or right after The Trade.

I don't understand this argument. Why would playing him where he has played the vast majority of his career mess with his game?

2nd base is a different animal than SS. Maybe his play would have been even better had he been put where he is most comfortable.

Actually, he seems to have a little trouble turning the DP at 2B (minor flaw compared to his other fine defensive skills). I think he'll be better at SS. It will be good to see how he handles plays in the hole and how his arm will be from SS before going into the off-season. On defense, a couple weeks is all you need to evaluate him (assuming no health issues holding him back). Not as subject to the streaks and small sample size stuff as offense is.

Putting him at 2nd base b/c of not wanting to mess w/ Lopez is an explanation that at least makes sense.

Not moving him to SS immediately upon acquiring dreck like Clayton was pure idiocy.

Actually, he hasn't played the vast majority of his career at SS.

And perhaps the reason JN hasn't played him there except for once previously is because the season is almost over now, so what difference does it make? I'm still in the minority that thinks he did the right thing by not changing his position mid season... next year is a different story. Hopefully he'll get a lot of practice at SS during ST 2007.

Look at his minor league stats, TB.

He was blocked w/ the big league club in Cleveland.

I know he played there in the minors but that was several years ago.

He played over 100 games last year at SS in the minors.
