I am fortunate to have befriended Johnny Sain in the late '80's-early '90's. His daughter Sheryl and grandson Wilson lived nearby and he came to visit them a couple of times a year. I guess he took time to visit occassionally with me because I enjoyed listening to his stories and philosophies. On one visit, he had just been to a card show with Warren Spahn, and he brought me several signed pictures (including the one 62 posted), a cartoon of him engineering a train pulling all the twenty game winners he had produced, and an old Sporting News article. I also have some photographs of him with my oldest son who was probably in the third grade at the time.

Sheryl once told me that she had been told that the Hall of Fame intended to induct him as a coach but planned to wait until after his death. Hmmm...I found that strange logic on their part, but now we will see.

I have recently taught one of his nieces. She had kept me informed about his stroke and nursing home life up until recently when she moved onto the high school.

Johnny Sain will always be one of my heroes and I am grateful for having been lucky enough to have listened to his stories and talked baseball with him. He and his family will be in my prayers.

Sain hated to run, pitchers loved him for that

"The greatest pitching coach who ever lived."

Jim Bouton

He coached the 1968 Tigers staff, so he was the last pitching coach of a 30 game winner.

Yes he was. Also, he invented the pitch-back and that ball with the various grips marked in colors.

He coached the 1968 Tigers staff, so he was the last pitching coach of a 30 game winner.

And he coached an incredible number of twenty game winners, many of whom had been very mediocre types before his magic was performed. I can't remember all without looking at that cartoon but some were Whitey Ford, Jim Bouton, Mudcat Grant, Jim Perry, Dave Boswell, Dean Chance, Jim Kaat, Earl Wilson, Denny McLain, Clyde Wright, Wilber Wood, and Stan Bahnsen.

Also, Leo Mazzone gives him credit for much of his success.

RIP Johnny Sain. Even though he was before my time he brought us one the most unforgettable lyrics of all time; "Spahn and Sain and pray for rain." I didn't know he was held in such high regard as a pitching coach. Going by what ever, one is saying he should be in the HOF. Looking at his record, he was one of many who may have lost some his best playing days to WWII or he would have been in the HOF as a player.

Also, until Dennis Eckersley repeated the feat, he was the only pitcher to win twenty games in one season and lead the league in saves in another.

If they are going to induct figures for their coaching abilities, he should certainly be in the Hall. To intentionally wait until the man is gone, however, would be one of the most pea-brained ideas I have ever heard.

RIP Johnny Sain.

I got a visit today after school from his teary eyed niece who came over from the senior high school to see if I'd heard the news. It sounds as though the passing was a blessing due to his seriously deteriorated condition. According to the niece, he will be buried in Havana, Arkansas, but there will also be services in Chicago.
