Pat Dobson dead at age 64

Orioles pitcher who won 20 games in 1972. WAAAAY before my time, but I found it sad that he:

A) is 2 months difference in my father's age (i mentioned him terminally ill in the claussen thread)
B) died on thanksgiving
C) report doesnt know the cause of death.

Actually, Pat Dobson won 20 games only one time in MLB and that came about in 1971 while with the Baltimore Orioles. Pat Dobson appeared with 6 teams over 11 big league seasons from '67-'77.

The '71 Orioles featured FOUR 20-game winners that year. Dave McNally won 21 games while Dobson, Mike Cuellar and Jim Palmer won 20 games apiece.

Chuck Dobson, Pat's younger brother, appeared with the A's and Angels in 9 seasons from 1967-1975. Chuck racked up 46 wins over three seasons from 1969-1971 as a member of the Oakland A's.

I've read that the Orioles tried to give Dobson a boost on his way to 20 wins by starting him the last game before the All Star Break and again in the first game after the break.

I've read that the Orioles tried to give Dobson a boost on his way to 20 wins by starting him the last game before the All Star Break and again in the first game after the break.

The Orioles used a 4-man rotation in '71. I did some further checking and it appears that Dobson was making his regularly scheduled start on the Sunday before the All-Star Break. Dobson won that Sunday game and his record stood at 10-4. His next start came four days later on the Thursday after the All-Star Break.

Orioles' starting pitchers Jim Palmer and Mike Cuellar pitched in the All-Star game in Detroit.

(I'm guessing Orioles' mgr Earl Weaver chose to keep Dobson in his normal turn because he wanted Palmer & Cuellar to rest a bit and because Dobson was on a tear)

Dobson won his last 7 starts BEFORE the break and his first five starts AFTER the break. He went 5-1 in June and 8-0 in July.

That would make sense. I guess someone had the wrong perception of what was going on.
