I know a thread has already been started, but I was wondering if someone who is attending Reds Fest today can take a picture of the new uniforms and post it here on RedsZone. I am unable to make it and I'm really pumped and curious to see how they turn out.

So what are they supposed to look like??

According to rumor:

* No vests
* No pinstripes
* All red caps at home
* Different font on the road jersey -- sort of a 1930s carnival look to the font (if that makes any sense)
* Mustachioed Mr. Red patch

I'm not real sure how they could "spice" them up. In any event, I like the traditional look even if our uniforms haven't been as consistent down the years as Detroit or the Yankees.

Just stay with the current jerseys. The pinstripes, the vests, the black bill, they all work to spice things up. I've got this image that they're going back to '70s/'80s style jerseys, and those were just so boring.

Like this is what I'm assuming, a heavy ornamental serif style font.

I like the one in the middle, it reminds me of rumble seats.

Paul Lukas at Uniwatch had the template in one of his columns a while back but I haven't been able to locate it.

I actually did find it (it was linked from Deadspin) and remember looking at it several months ago. The link was to a photobucket file that has since been removed. However, the jersey font is similar to the picture WOY posted (and I'm almost positive VPlum was using the typeface as an avatar at one point).

I agree, pedro. Not a fan of the pinstripes, the vests, or the black billed caps--so all changes this year sound good to me.

Ironic that the new uniforms are rumored to have no pinstripes, and the new website added pinstripes.

no pinstripes with red trim around the neck, down the front and around the cuffs of the sleeves. alternate is basically the same i guess with white trim instead of black.

Here (http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061201/SPT04/312010030) is the story from the Enquirer. On the right side of the page is a link to some photos.

Are there stripes on the pants? You'd never know from looking at those photos. And how about some photos of the backs? And PLEASE tell me that's not a black belt with those home uniforms!!

I don't understand the point of the black bill for the road hats. We have no black in our uniform anymore, but we are going to keep our road hats black? Makes no sense. And if our home uniforms have black belts, that would just be horrible.

I am glad we ditched the sleveless basketball uniforms, though.

Based upon the pictures above: BLECH!

They are pretty bland and generic looking. Not much to like about the pin stripping (unless you're a Red Sox fan).

Are the road unis really that dark a grey? Hopefully it's my monitor or something. If the pants are the same color they'll look like they are playing in pajammas. The type face smacks of someone trying to convey something but not knowing what and succeeding at failing.

Personally, I love the vests and they've been synonymous with Cincinnati baseball for more than 50 years. Why discontinue that if you want to march down the heritage path?

All in all, they are even worse than I feared they'd be. I guess it's time to get some new owners so we can go through this again in two years.

I really like the new unis. My only complaint is the black bill on the rode caps.
Vests were great until half the league followed suit. The new font and big numbers make these very nice.

Notice how much larger Denorfia's name and number are on the back of his home jersey than they are on Coffey's road jersey? Also, the black dropshadowing is overdone on the back of the home jersey. Denorfia's name is hard to read.

The road cap messes up what is otherwise a great set. I hope they eventually phase that silly black bill out altogether.

Overall, I'm pleased, but they're not perfect.

I like the road and alternate uniforms.

I strongly dislike the home. While I'm estatic that they FINALLY dumped the pinstripes, the end result looks really, really plain. The piping makes me think Red Sox.

One of the cool things about the sleeveless look was that it added more RED to the uniform. White is the primary color you see now.

I find myself, once again, saying that the uniforms would be fine with some tweaking. Dump the sleeves and piping!

That black bill looks absolutely stupid.

12-01-2006, 11:20 PM
I prefered the sleeveless uniforms. It's true that half the league followed suit but the structure of the Reds sleeveless always seemed to be the best. The striping does seem a lot like the Red Sox, and I don't mind the fact that the pinstripes are gone. But I think the home jersey would be a lot better if it was sleeveless. I completely dislike the red alternate jersey. It reminds me of the alternate cardinals jerseys, then I start thinking about how much I hate the Cardinals rather than focusing on the Reds.

I really like the look of the new unis and I love the old style Mr. Red on the sleeve. I'm not so crazy about the black bills on the away caps, but that's pretty minor. The one thing I noticed that didn't happen was actually bringing back the "Red legs" by shortening the pant legs and again showing a red stirrup - I was really hoping for that.
Overall though, I like them, especially the home uni - it has a clean, crisp, old style feel to it - and did I mention I REALLY like the old style Mr. Red.....:thumbup:

For the detractors of the 70s unis, the players have to show the stirrups to make them work. If they wear the pants all the way down, they do look stupid, as evidenced by the 70s night against the Indians two years ago. With the stirrups, they looked nice.

As for the new unis, I love going back to the all Red cap. Growing up, I collected helmets, got one every time I went to a game, and I always wanted the Reds to get a two tone or multi-colored cap. Now, I realize the Red only has its place and is much sharper given the team's colors.

The Red tops look much better without the pinstripe pants and I actually like them now. The homes are nice and crisp looking, but the road grays are my favorite. I agree that they could rid of the black billed cap, though.

Did any of you read the article in the Enquirer about the new uniforms? The process was fascinating to me...the whole thing is a huge deal. The design representative from MLB has to work with the team, do research, even come visit the city to get a feel for the ballpark and the history and what's appropriate, before a change in uniform is approved by MLB. Also, the process is long-term: these changes had to be approved by last MAY, which says to me that Castellini was on this pretty much the minute he took over. And that also might have been where the navy blue rumors came from...if I recall, it was around that time (april-Mayish) that those rumors hit. They might have been considering it, or even proposed it and had it rejected.

I'd post a link, but I'm not that nice.

They did a great job with them. Really glad they kept the all red alternate style. Does anyone know if this is going to stay as just the home Sunday jersey. I like it that way so it doesn't get overdone. Seems some teams start wearing there alternate all the time. Houston used it's brick red alternate way more than the road gray last year. Kinda ruins the effect of a special alternate, when they use it all the time......

Well, in fairness, Denorfia would make a nice appetizer for one of Big Todd's larger meals.

Probably similar to the Sam Adams issue with the Bengals, the numbers on his jersey look tiny.

Yep, that why I said just keep it as the Sunday home. I think it works out to about 13 times a season. That's enough and keeps it a little special for the Sunday home tilts......

I really like the new uni's. Like most of you I'm not crazy about the black bill on the away hats since we don't have any black anymore (thankfully). They should make the bill gray instead to match the uni's, now that would be stylish. I would like the guys to pull up the pant legs to show off the red socks like Deno did last year. With the long baggy pants that players are leaning towards they look more like sweatpants than baseball pants.
