Bernie Williams: Good Fit for the Reds?

It's a simple topic. Would Bernie Williams be a good fit with the Reds (and vice versa)? There's a decent chance the Yanks won't re-sign him, the Reds need a right-handed bat, he has veteran leadership with tons of playoff experience, and I'd say he's probably in the Reds' price range (he made less than $3,000,000 last year).

Personally, I think he'd be a perfect platoon with Griffey. Also, he can play all three outfield spots if needed. Granted, the odds are slim that he'd come to Cincinnati over whatever other options there may be, but if he's willing, I think Way-K should go for it.

What do all of you think? Is it at all possible? Would it make sense for the Reds?

Bernie Williams is a DH at best. If he were to platoon with KGJ, they would combined to be the biggest defensive liability in MLB history.

I'm talking about a one-year contract. But you guys are right--Bubba Crosby and Josh Hamilton would probably be much better options at this point in their careers. Bernie Williams and his four World Series rings probably wouldn't play the game the right way anyway.

Can his four rings play defense or swing a bat? Bernie was pretty darn good several years ago but he's well past his prime. I guess I'd take him as a reserve outfielder if he'd come cheap but no way he'd ever play CF.

Griffey is a 10-time Gold Glover and he's that bad. Bernie's probably a little better but he's nothing more than a left fielder anymore. Like I said, I wouldn't mind him as a 4th or 5th outfielder if he's cheap.

Griffey has a bunch of Gold Gloves...Abreu and Grudzielanek both have GG. hell, Palmeiro has one and he only played 18 games in the field.

Yeah, I agree on the fourth outfielder thing. I'd gladly sign Williams to a one year, $2,500,000 contract (although that may not be "cheap"), even if he'd just be the fourth outfielder. However, I wouldn't say Griffey is "bad", even at this point in his career.

2.5 is a little too much for me. Griffey is the worst centerfielder in baseball by nearly every metric you can find. He's "bad".

Yeah, you're right. Boy, would I love the chance to see him play regularly though. But he should retire with the Yankees and I think he probably will. It'd be pretty hard for him to improve on his career at this point, and he doesn't strike me as the type to play baseball at any cost. He has other things to do, you know. Because he is a rennaissance man who plays classical guitar, turns water to wine, spins the earth, that sort of thing.

If this were Outside the Park Baseball I'd have no issue with this. Unfortunately, this is real life and there is no way on Earth Bernie Williams would come to Cincinnati to be an also ran outfielder.
