View Full Version : What about the Unit?

Its being reported that the yankees might consider trading Johnson to make room for clemens, pavano or even hughes. Personally I doubt they will trade him, maybe in July it could be more possible. But he is due 16 mill this year, at that price with his health issues they probably wont get to much for him. A couple of avg prospects most likely. So would you take the risk for 16 million dollars?

I would be suprised if they could only get a couple of average prospects for him.

I bet they'd pay some of his contract to get more, but he hasn't exactly been his old self the last few seasons, and he does have a NTC, so that could complicate matters.

True but with pitching being at such a premium now a days, even a run down Randy Johnson is somewhat valuable.

I think it depends on the price, but looking at how the Reds rotation stands now, I'd at least have to consider it.

I'd have serious problems if WK brought in another pitcher who will up the average age pf the pitching staff. There aren't many out there who could do it...but Randy could.

What about the Unit?

It's fine.

Yours?

yeah, chalk me up for a big "no thanks". He's too fragile of a personality to deal with the local media.

I'll say this, though, if the Yanks are really looking just to get rid of Pavano and pay most of his salary I think the Reds should consider it. If they get him for what would effectively be 2 years/8M or so that's the kind of high-risk gamble I'd be inclined to endorse.

What about the Unit

Seriously, there are just some things I won't discuss on this board.

Good god man, this is a family board. Such rude questions asking about the unit.

Serriously...pass. He's past his "purchase by this date for freshness" date.

I look at it this way:

Randy Johnson>Eric Milton

Randy Johnson>Eric Milton

I look at it this way:

Randy Johnson = 2 Eric Milton's on the payroll.

Randy Johnson = Eric Milton in the risk of injury dept.

Randy Johson > Eric Milton, in age.

Randy Johnson blowing up pidgeons with his fastball = good.

Randy Johnson being old enough to be injured by a flying pidgeon "fastball" = bad.

At some point you have to take a chance on something besides AAAA never will bes.

So a has been is worth 8 times the money as a never will be?

although.........now that I think about it, having Jr and The Unit together would make one fine bingo squad.

Tampa Bay took a chance on a high school teacher. How crazy was that?

Let me get this straight. Acquiring Johnson, his $16M salary, his bad back and giving up prospects and you ask if we would take that risk? :help:

If the Yankees picked up half of that $16M, I'd deal Votto for Johnson. Maybe that's why I'm not a GM

Ya, but that was 100% risk free. No salary commitment. If the Unit bombs, that's a lot of money wasted. Too big a risk for this team IMO.

Johnson was reported to want to play in or close to Arizona

Yeah that lasted a long time and cost about as much as Johnson's Tuesday-Sunday portion of one week of wages.

BTW Randy Johnson was my 4th starter in Strat this season. 17 less HR's allowed then Walks.

Ughhh...

I think RJ has a no-trade clause, and he'd probably only go back to Arizona or somewhere else on the West Coast.

Griffey for Randy Johnson. Straight up.

All of you complaining about Johnson's health seem to be ignoring the fact that he pitched over 200 innings for the past three seasons. I don't have the stats in front of me, but I seem to remember someone pointing out that Johnson had a poor BABIP.

Yes, he's old and on the verge of a breakdown. So is Griffey.

Too fragile a personality for the bulldogs in the local Cincinnati media?

The very first MLB strike out victim of that high school teacher was one Royce Spencer Clayton!!!

Imagine that!!!

Randy would retire before leaving the Yanks at this point in his career.

I would love to see a Griffey for RJ trade...Griffey is my all time favorite player, and I would hate to see him on the Yankees, but this would be a great move for both players as they wind down their amazing careers...

RJ would get back to the NL, where I have no doubt he would regain his dominance, and Griffey would get to be in a lineup where he could play DH and be surrounded by great hitters...

This also would get the yankees a great leader that could help put them over the edge. And would obviously get the reds a top of the rotation player that could definitly help...

I can think of about one trillion reasons not to acquire Randy Johnson, but I don't really know that the Cincinnati media is one of them. He's been playing major league baseball for almost 20 years, with the last two of them spent in the most brutal media market in the country, and he's survived eight postseasons. Saying that he couldn't handle the Cincinnati media is like saying that a man who has just singlehandedly built a house is incapable of hammering a nail into a board.

Randy Johnson isn't going to want to go to a team like the Reds who are borderline contenders at best at his age so i dont think i really matters if we want him or not

His baseball reference neutralized stats are scary bad. I can only imagine what those same stats would look like in Great American.
