View Full Version : RZ 101 - Asking "How To" Questions

Okay, I have no shame. :help:

I have some questions that might be simplistic to some of you. I'd really appreciate it if you all could give me some answers. The questions have to do with things that can be used when posting here at RZ. I tried the FAQ, but could not find the answers. I hope the answers might be helpful to others as well. Please ask other questions if you have them and they might help me and others as well. Thanks in advance!

(1) Putting a picture in a post.
>> I still use the old-fashioned method (using the manage attachments button). It shows the picture as a thumbnail. How do you put a picture in a post so it is free-standing and not shown as an attached thumbnail? I assume you have to use the Insert Image button.... but I still need step-by step help!

(2) Using Code
>> I see this used by members when posting statistics. It is really a neat way to post stats and keeps columns in a nice row for easy reading. I have no clue how to do this!

1) Find the picture you want to put in the post.
2) Copy the address in the address bar of that internet web page.
3) Click on the yellow folder looking thing where you are posting (it will say Insert Image).
4) It will bring up an Explorer User Prompt window.
5) Paste your web address into that box and click OK.
6) It will show on your post as yourwebaddress[IMG]
7) Click Post.

BTW, the "code" thing is a little more difficult. I can't remember who was testing that awhile ago, but they might be able to help. Might have been TRF? :dunno: There is a link inside the box where you post where you can highlight what you want to be code and then hit "wrap CODE tags around selected text" It displays as a # when you click the "go advanced" option at the bottom of the quick reply box. IIRC, it was a little more complex than just hitting that button, though. Give it a couple tests in here and see if it works.

My question: Say you are writing something and you want to insert a link, but want to put a name on it, instead of the link address. Like if I wrote: Take a look at my home. How do I get the word "home" to be a link to a picture of my house? I've always wondered this and never figured out how to do. I get jealous when someone else does it.

1) When creating a post, type in "google" in plain text.
2) Highlight the word "google".
3) Click on the world/link icon http://www.redszone.com/forums/skins/RedsZone/editor/createlink.gif
4) Type/Paste your URL: http://www.google.com

Code displays tabbed data best, it's called tab-delimited, Delimited data uses specific characters (delimiters) to separate its values (in this case it's the tab key)

What I do is I cut the code and paste it in notepad and use the tab key to assure that that each piece is separate and lines up.

Since we are asking "how to" questions...

How do you get that little blue emotcom that barfs? I don't see it in any of the selections. And it seems like there are a few other emotcoms people have that are "non standard".

When you reply to the post, you will see a selection of emoticons to the right. There is a link there that says "More". Click on that, the barf emoticon, along with many others are located in there.

Alternatively, you can just type in :barf_: (without the underscore) That will work too.

What paint meant was that you could type in :b-a-r-f: (without the hyphens) and not have to search for it. If I type in :e-e-k: (without the hyphens) I get this guy

Yeah, I was hoping if I quoted the code, it wouldn't get recognized. Apparently it still does.

Reply to this post. When looking at the smilies located to the right, click on the [More] link below them. The "barf" smilies is there. Occassionally I'll search for a new smilie from another board and link it in as an image.

Thanks for all the replies. I've gone to the "more" smilies page many times but it never occured to me to expand the page and see what was in the 2nd column. Duuuhhhhh.

From my experience, the code option only responds to tab delimiters and drops all others (notably spaces). The "easiest" way to do it is to create the table in notepad using tabs to line everything up.

How about this one I occasionally see on Redszone and haven't quite perfected yet.

1) Quote multiple people's post and reply to both in the same post...

2) Split someone's quote into 2 seperate (or more) sections and reply to what they said point by point.

Anybody help with that?

the first one (by hitting the " piece of paper next to quote on the first post and then quote on the 2nd quote I want to capture....

But I'm not sure how you break someone's quote into sections, unless you do it manually. Is that the only way you can do it?

Testing this:

C:\Documents and Settings\XXXXXX\My Documents\My Pictures\Buried.jpg

Can't do that...hmmm.

Help please.

Here's what I did. I went to My pictures on my PC. I clicked on a picture in My Pictures and dragged it onto a internet window. The internet window opened and I dropped the picture in that window. I was thinking if I did that I could add the image as a [IMG] instead of having to add it as an attachment. Doesn't seem to work as the path the internet window is from my desktop and more specifically, the My Pictures folder. Is there a way to accomplish this, so that I can add the image through the [IMG] tag instead of attaching it?

You can only use the IMG tag with a web address.

If you want to add a picture from your hard drive, click on "Manage Attachments" underneath the posting field (under Additional Options). You will be able to add attachments there.

If you don't want to post it through an attachment, you need to find a way to upload it online first. Then you can use the IMG tag.

Thanks paint. I knew I could add it as an attachment, and know how to add attachments, I just wasn't sure if I could somehow move that picture to an internet window and then add it as an IMG instead of an attachment. The bolded line above tells me that is not possible.

At the top of this page (and every page) there is a link to the search fields. You can either type in "Adam Dunn strikeout" in the search field there, or go to the advanced search field and narrow your search more specifically to what you are looking for (only Old Red Guard threads between Jan 1, 2005-March 12, 2005, for example). Then, just hit search and it will show you results.

I'll try to keep this simple for ya. :)

1) Right-click on the picture on the Yahoo page, and select Properties.
2) Highlight and Copy the entire URL Address in the Properties screen.
3) Paste that entire URL address in a post. Put a tag in front and a tag behind the address you've pasted into the post.

Here's the result ...

As far as the CODE tags, I just simply use Notepad. Type/paste in whatever data it is into Notepad exactly how you wish to display it inside the CODE tags. Then just copy/paste everything from Notepad to the post, and throw a [ CODE ] tag before the data and a [ /CODE ] tag after the data (no spaces between the brackets and CODE or /CODE).

Here's an example ... the first is an image of what the data looks like in Notepad, and the second is what it looks like in CODE form in a post ...
