More saturine than the May 8th contest in which Krenchicki could have been the hero in the 15th, but backwards K'ed instead? Shirley was the loser in that one. Hume was sublime in relief, however.

Danny Driessen was a rare find, an undrafted FA, a real Howsam guy. Wagner didn't like Ray Knight all that much (thought he was a one-hit wonder from '79). Wagner figured that he let go all the power (even though it was declining) in Foster and Griffey, so he thought he could get Cesar Cedeno on the cheap, plug Bench at 3rd (since he'd already alerted the FO he wasn't catching anymore) and hope that Driessen would get something started at 1b.

Hey, '82 wasn't that bad - at least they could find out that Eddie Milner could play a little, Gary Redus had a nice start, and Paul Householder really sucked.

Howsam, ironically, came back in '83 and traded Danny to the Expos in '84.

I was curious as to why Soto left the game after allowing just one hit in six innings.

As it turns out, Soto was hit by a pitch in the top of the seventh-inning. Pitcher Greg Harris was used as a pinch-runner for Soto.

Soto made his next start 5 days later as the Reds beat the Mets, 6-2. In that game, Soto went the distance and allowed 7 hits, just one walk, and 8 K's.

What is painful to me about that year....is that i remember that year more vividly than 1975-1976 beacuse i was 15 by then and so it sticks further in your mind.

What is even scarier is that this is the kind of team WK would have liked......speed, defense, contact hitters. :D

My favorite Bip Roberts memory:


Bip appeared in a 1995 MLB commercial with his then-teammate Tony Gwynn. Holding up a fictious Bip Roberts rookie card, Bip says "...that it's now worth $200 and several years from now, who knows? $1000, $2000, maybe even..." Gwynn is at this point reading the price guide and corrects Bip by pointing out that it's Robin Roberts' rookie card and that Bip's card is actually worth four cents! After Bip gets over the initial shock, he tells Gwynn that it's four cents if it's in excellent condition, but ten cents if it's totally Mint, to which Gwynn sarcastially replies, "Well, sorry..."
