Here is the Reds Hot Stove League show report for 1-31-07. Marty opened the show by talking about how great the caravan was.
After commercial the next caller congratulated the Reds on the caravan and said he got to go to one stop on the southern portion and one on the northern. He asked if this is unique to the Reds. Marty said it wasn't. He said Columbus was great and Huntington was mind-boggling. The caller said the lines were huge at the mall in Huntington. Marty said this one was one of the best he's done.
The next caller asked about the Buster Olney rumor about EE and Bray going to the Phils for Lieber and Rowand. He said that would be an awful trade. Marty said he didn't know quite how to react to that trade (must be the first he's heard of it). Marty said Rowand would be the CF and said he wouldn't know who the Reds would play at 3rd if that deal was made. (Somewhere in Mexico, Juan Castro is crying). Marty said that Lieber has been an outstanding pitcher in the past but right now, he doesn't know. He assumes Lieber's healthy and says Wayne won't make another trade for a pitcher unless he knows for sure he's healthy especially after what happened last year with the Nats. (Ooooh, burn.) Marty said he's a big Rowand fan. He also said that he'd take a long look at Steve Finley but he's not the GM and the Reds aren't that keen on him. (Marty must need a 4th for Canasta).
The next caller asked Marty how does he size up the Central besides the Reds. He asked about the Soriano signing and the condition of Prior and Wood (We have a closet Cubs fan call in? Who dialed the phone for him?) He also asked why Sam the Sham is coming back. Marty said that Shammy is probably there to redeem himself and wants to get out from under the steroid cloud. He figures that if Shammy has a good year, people might forget about the steroid thing. Marty said the Cubs signed Prior to a 1 year deal - avoiding arbitration - for $3.575M. He'll also get $150K for making 27 starts and another $150K for making 30 starts. (Yeah, like the Chubs are going to have to pay out that extra $300K). Marty said that Soriano will be an impact player but has a problem with all the money Lilly and Marquis are getting. He said Marquis is about as hittable a regular starting pitcher he's ever seen. (I guess Marty doesn't count any Reds pitchers in that category. Lord knows there are no dearth of candidates). The division is wide open, blah blah blah, Milwaukee most improved, blah blah blah.
After commercial the next caller asked if Joe was coming back. Marty said Joe would do about 20-25 games and quite a few ST games.
The next caller said he thought Conine can help in the lineup and hopefully will help in teaching others how to be professional ballplayers. Marty said it's a great addition and he doesn't care if he's 40 cause he has a young body. (Ewwwwww) He's been relatively injury free, he's been on a championship team and Knows How To Win. He's a professional hitter and can play several positions. He says everyone in the Reds organization is thrilled to see him put on a Reds uniform (Some more than others, I guess :luvu: )
The next caller asked when Opening Day tickets went on sale. Marty didn't know and told him to go to Reds.com to find out. The caller asked if Marty was going to broadcast the March 31 game at 5th 3rd field in Dayton. Marty said he will be doing the game.
The next caller said Wayne has a lot of class since he's talked to him on the phone a few times and it doesn't matter whether you agree with him or not, he's great to talk with. Marty agreed and said you can joke with him and be critical of his moves and it's OK with him.
The next caller asked about Barry Bonds and wondered if Marty thought if his records are legit. Marty said MLB is in between a rock and a hard place and they are going to have a tough time trying to figure out how to celebrate the record while doing justice to Hank Aaron who did it under no clouds of suspicion.
After commercial, Marty pimped ticket plans. The next caller asked Marty what he thought of Wayne's deals being compared to Bob Howsam's deals. Marty said that Howsam should be in the HOF and doesn't understand why he isn't even on the ballot. Marty said he has never thought about the similarities between the two. He said what concerns him is that he thinks Wayne wants to win with pitching and defense and it may be difficult to do that in a HR ballpark like Great American Ballpark.
The next caller asked if the Reds had a shot at being on Sunday Night baseball. Marty said he hoped not. He said it would be OK at home but on the road, if it's getaway day, it's a long night.
The next caller asked if Marty thought what was the most significant improvement on the Reds pitching staff. Marty said he doesn't see any improvement other than adding Homer. He said he spent 4 days with Homer on the caravan and he doesn't think pressure is going to bother him. He thinks Homer can have a major impact on the staff in 2007.
The next caller asked if Homer will start the year in the Reds rotation. Marty said he doesn't think so unless he blows everyone away in ST. Marty said that he's never seen a better Reds pitching prospect than Homer.
The next caller asked Marty if the Pokey Reese HR call in Sept of 99 was a special call for him. Marty said he doesn't remember them and doesn't have the recall Joe or Vin Scully has. The caller asked how the 1999 team rated in his book. Marty said they were one of the top 5 but the 1990 team was his favorite because no one including him - gave them credit for winning anything when the season started. He said the 99 team stood out because of Greg Vaughn's leadership.

The next caller asked if they allowed people to watch ST workouts. Marty said they did and you can watch on several fields. The caller asked if the Reds regretted trading Kearns. Marty said it was a mistake to trade Kearns but he can't be critical of it since he thought it was a good deal at the time. He said losing FeLo was no big deal since he didn't feel FeLo could take you to the next level playing SS. He thinks if Majewski can come back and Bray pitches well, it will be a better trade then than it looks now.
The next caller asked why Dummy Hoy wasn't in the HOF. Marty said he was in the Reds HOF but didn't know why he wasn't in the baseball HOF. The caller said he was responsible for umpires using ball and strike signs.
