The Baltimore Orioles?

Erik Bedard would look excellent in the 2 spot of the rotation. What would we have to offer to get him?

SEASON PITCHING STATS
ERA W L IP
3.76 15 11 196.1
BB K AVG A K/9 BB/9
69 171 .258 7.8 3.2

The Orioles are offering him about 2.7 million in arbitration as we speak and Bedard is asking for 4... (compare those numbers to kyle lohse who signed for 4.2!!!)

The O's need a LF and more pitching. However a package of say a Dunn, Milton/Lohse, Freel and possibly a PitcherTBNL from the minors for a Eric Bedard, Nick Markakis and a mid tier prospect. I would be praising WK for days.

Nick Markakis Bats L Throws L
AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB/SO--SB CS OBP SLG AVG
491 72 143 25 2 16 62 220 43/72---2 0 .351 .448 .291

S/O%
.146

Markakis is a solid contact hitter with a little pop and an average glove in

Lineup

CF Deno
LF Markakis (I'm assuming he could play left)
3B EE
RF KGJ
1B Hatt/Conine
2B BP
C Ross
SS Gonzo

SP
1 Harang
2 Bedard
3 Arroyo
4 Lohse
5 Saarlos/ whoever actually wins the job

The 1-3 would be the best in the NL by far. Also we will have speed in the outfield and defense for days... I'm not entirely sure how many years Bedard has left in arbritration but we wouuld have the $$ from the Milton contract. The trade proposal isn't perfect but what would it take?

I don't think the Orioles would deal Bedard. He's too young and cheap for them to deal at this point. I think Krivsky would even make it a Dunn for Bedard deal straight-up if he could... but the Orioles would be crazy to do that, too. They need quality pitching to have a prayer in that division, and Markakis is younger and perhaps (gasp) better than Dunn, at least as an all-around player.

I think Bedard and Markakis are the untouchables on the Orioles. A ton of teams were after Bedard at the trade deadline last year and nothing happened. The Orioles have no reason to get rid of him at all.

Angelos is Greek and LOVES Markakis because he's Greek too. That's why he stuck around so long last year after struggling bad in the first half. UNTOUCHABLE.

If, as you say, the Orioles need a LF and more pitching, why would they trade Bedard and Markaskis?

One rival GM jokingly refers to Orioles outfield prospect Nick Markakis as "The Chosen One" -- Markakis, like Orioles owner Peter Angelos, is of Greek descent, and executives from other clubs say that makes him practically untouchable. Markakis, 22, is expected to open at Class AAA but could be in the majors by the end of the season.

At the start of the season Markakis struggled for the O's. It looked like he was overmatched. NickyV even suggested the only reason he was in the lineup was due to his Greek heritage, Orioles owner Peter Angelos is also Greek. But now it seems Baltimore might have known what they were doing. Nick is now hitting in the #2 slot in the batting order and in this game single handedly defeated the hard charging Minnesota Twins 6-3, with his homers being the difference

The Orioles would never make that deal -- Markakis and Bedard both have a much bigger upside, and I don't think anyone is going to take Milton off our hands. Dunn is a good power hitter, but that is about it.

Pretend you're Krivsky and the O's Jim Duquette approached you with an idea...how about trading Homer, Bruce, Cueto and $10M for Benson and Gibbons? Would you do it?

The original trade idea is roughly equivalent when considering transfers of salary and total talents that would be going both ways.
