Seeing that picture of Hatteberg, I wonder how many MLB'ers throw right but bat left.

I wouldn't think it's very unusual, but not common either.

Even less common the other way around.

Funny you bring that up....the guy who probably will take over for Hatteberg, Joey Votto, throws right handed but hits left handed.

BTW, two Reds 1Bs in a row have thrown right, batted left (Casey did as well).Back in the day (my day that is) the left handed 1st sacker was wanted to help keep the running game in check, he didn't have to go across his body on a PO move. Now it likely matters less.

That's me :) (throw left bat right).

But that's because I have 20-600 vision out of my right eye and 20-10 out of my left. My problem was I'm a barely passable RH hitter and I can't see the darn ball coming batting lefty.

Here's the list of firstbasemen in the MLB that throw right and hit left.
Sean Casey(Pit), Howie Clark(SD), Tony Clark(ARZ), Carlos Delgado(NYM), Greg Dobbs(PHI), Ryan Doumit(PIT), Chris Duncan(STL), Adam Dunn(CIN), Robert Fick(WAS), Prince Fielder(MIL), Jason Giambi(NYY), Travis Hafner(CLE), Jack Hannahan(DET), Scott Hatteberg(CIN), Mike Jacobs(FLA), Dan Johnson(OAK), Mike Lamb(HOU), John Mabry(COL), Paul McAnulty(SD), Doug Mientkiewicz(NYY), Kendry Morales(LAA), Justin Morneau(MIN), Eric Munson(HOU), Greg Norton(TB), Jason Smith(TOR), Matt Stairs(TOR), Mark Teixeira(TEX), Jim Thome(CHW), Scott Thorman(ATL), Terry Tiffee(BAL), Todd Walker(SD). Votto also as already mentioned also throws R and bats L. This is from a list of around 100 players that are strictly first basemen, or play first and other positions. this is a list of 31 guys. And almost 30% of firstbasemen in the MLB, throw righty and hit lefty. That's quite a few. I believe there were only two or three firstbasemen that threw lefty and hit righty. Switch hitters are also included.

On the subject of the hats, courtesy of Hal (http://www.daytondailynews.com/s/content/oh/story/sports/pro/reds/2007/02/18/ddn021807redsnotes.html):

Hideous hats

The Reds' spring training caps aren't the most attractive baseball attire ever worn — red with a darker red wishbone 'C' that is difficult to see and a bit of black trim over each ear, "that makes it look as if we're all wearing do-rags," pitcher Matt Belisle said.

Most players said they looked like NASCAR caps, but outfielder Josh Hamilton won the prize when he said, "I feel like I work at Jiffy Lube, but I'm happy and proud to be wearing this Reds stuff."

I don't get it.

That's a line from Moneyball, in reference to "How Good" a player looks as opposed to how well he plays the game. Like the classic scouts line, "He's got a good face."

IIRC they were referring to Jeremy Brown (http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/players/playerpage/390797),

Now, I have no problem with long hair, but as usual we have baseball players taking a fashion statement at face value and ignoring the subtleties surrounding it. First of all, baseball or no baseball, you have to be careful about growing your hair out if it's fine or straight. Some layering is required, otherwise you just end up looking like a human pony, a being whose existence is only permitted in the kind of joke porn movies you watch in order to spice up drinking games in college. The larger baseball-only problem is that baseball players always wear hats. They wear some version of a hat while batting, while pitching, while fielding, and even while practicing. Because they're participating in athletic endeavors at this time, and because they're usually doing so in a fairly warm climate, they sweat. The hair tucked behind the ears due to the cap combines with the sweat to produce a full-on, grease-augmented mullet.

Our representative example: post-Oakland, pre-Yankee Johnny Damon. Terrible. His hair is just too straight and fine to pull this off. I don't care how he feels about this look off the field; 99.9999% of the world only ever sees him on the field, with his locks flowing out from his jaunty cap. And the temporary mullet makes him look far more like a hitchiker in Utah than a baseball player. And Homer Bailey, bless his youthful soul, is coming dangerously close to this look.

Even if your hair is not straight or fine, you usually end up a victim of the sweat mullet. Witness Gary Majewski. Arroyo actually comes the closest to pulling this off -- partly because of the thickness of his hair and partly because of the color, but largely because I suspect he has some layers cut in there. Guys, you make a lot of money. Go to a salon. You don't have to tell anybody, and even if people find out, the rewards you will reap from the improvement in haircut will easily cancel out any mocking.

I do not tell these men what to do with their hair. I merely present the facts of temporary fine-hair sweat mulletdom.

I've heard it called a "knuckle-curve" but whenever I used to throw it (wasn't professionally taught it, just read stuff on the internet and picked it up), it was just like a curve, with maybe a little more sink than a typical curve ball. Eventually went to the grip with my thumb and middle finger thrown like a football. Works good.

That football pitch sounds like a slider, TeamSelig.

Good point, as I've read thats how you throw a slider. When I looked this up though, I'm pretty sure it was called a curve. I always liked the above curve/slider cause I could throw it harder and it had more bite to it, which makes it sound like a slider even more, now that I think about it.

The knuckle curve (that Homer uses) seems to put less pressure on your arm. I'm pretty sure you don't have to snap the wrist or anything, just throw it with your knuckle up (what I did anyways). That would seem to be alot healthier on the arm? Anyone know for sure?

The arm has to get itself in a 90 degree position to throw a really good curveball, pulling down hard and letting the ball roll out of your hand and off your fingers, particularly the middle finger. The knuckle curve lets you get a lot of pressure with your middle finger and takes the pointer finger out of the equation, so to speak. You still have to snap it off to get the proper rotation. I know that Burt Hooten used it in the early 70's and Mike Mussina has used it for his entire career. I'm not sure that it is any easier on the arm. To get the downward rotation for that good 12 to 6 curveball, you really have to snap it off, hard. Sliders and cutters are a little more of what I call "wristy" pitches, although it still puts a lot of pressure on the elbow. You can, indeed, throw them with a lot more velocity than a curveball.

The Reds' spring training caps aren't the most attractive baseball attire ever worn — red with a darker red wishbone 'C' that is difficult to see...

Well, one thing we can say about the hats...they certainly are RED! And no matter whether I personally like them or not, I am just thrilled that this time of year has finally arrived and we are looking at new ST photos of Reds players.

Who is that in the background? I did a double take as it looked a lot like Willy Mo Pena.
No, he's in Ft. Myers with what seems like half the population of Tokyo. I saw a picture of him standing next to Dustin Pedroia and another of him holding Big Papi's puppy. I guess the Boston Globe photographers can't resist the big next to little thing.

Is Pedroia expected to make the team this year? I've always liked him dating back to his Arizona State days. And will Wily Mo be a full time starter? I hope so...I think he could easily hit 40 homers this season if given the chance.

Oh, yeah, Pedroia's pretty much locked in as the starting 2B. There's still no starting OF spot for Wily Mo yet.

I think there is something about the gear in Spring training that makes players look leaner. They all look like they are in better shape than at the end of last season.

I haven't seen Weathers yet though.

I saw Weathers on a video at MLB.com and he looks leaner too...I don't think it is the uni's I think it is the ownership and FO telling these guys we are not a beer league and to act like they want to be in the majors!

I loved seeing Arroyo in a video interview on MLB.com talking about how he likes to sing but he LOVES baseball...he said he'll sing two or three shows and be done for a while...but he could come to the ballpark 365!

I also think that the players know that this ownership is for real...they are not going to simply go out and sign a FA but for guys that produce to their potential or show effort in going that way they will invest the money in them...IE, Adam Dunn looks as if he has gotten that message...came into camp weighing less with the words "I can be great" rolling off his tongue instead of what we have heard in the past.

Just my perspective.

Bronson has always said that music is his hobby and baseball is his career... one that he loves... and that's the reason he doesn't write music but instead does covers.

What happened to Coffey?! Is he wearing a fat suit in that picture or did he gain 40 pounds this offseason?

Once again only the link shows up. Why, I don't know.
They are doing that because they arent true IMAGE urls. They are pointing to a web page that has the image contained in it. Thus, its a link.
