Oh great! Is Ross gonna bat 9th all season long with or without a DH?!

I sincerely doubt that. Look at the lineup. And this is what, their 3rd Grapefruit game? You pretty much already know what you're going to get out of your regulars and vets. That's why these other guys are getting playing time. That's what ST is all about.

But why not have Ross batting 9th with the top of the order coming up?

Chat will be open when the game starts at 1 PM :beerme:

And if we are using DH, I'd think that'd be a perfect chance to let Griff swing the bat a few times.

But I guess if he's not ready there's no need to rush him.

He is a catcher. Catchers bat 8th, except when there is a DH.

Brantley talked for a few minutes about how important it is to get JR a ton of at-bats so he needs to move to RF to lessen the wear-and-tear to his body. And then Brantley said he didn't care if that meant JR. going to 1B if that would keep him healthy. He said the Reds need to do everything to keep JR on the field. I'd say it depends on their status with the team. Most starters probably have nothing to prove and look to try to work and pitches and the like, while non-roster guys and pitchers looking for a spot in the back of the rotation/pen probably go just a bit short of real game effort.

If he does have a strong spring, then he definitely deserves a roster spot. But they'll make a stupid move like sending Deno down instead of cutting Conine or trading either Deno or Freel for help elsewhere.

I would like to see Deno get a fair shake in this competition, since I am one of the drivers of his bandwagon. Even though it's early, it seems like Hamilton is being treated as Freel's main competition and Deno's getting the shaft.

Yes, but when the Reds play they are not permitted to broadcast on the WLW channel. You have to find one of their baseball-dedicated channels to hear the game, and you can only hear the Reds announcers when they're playing at home. The WLW channel has most of the pre-game show, though, and post-game, and all the Reds sports talk.

The WLW website explains it better than I can:

WHY DON'T YOU BROADCAST THE CINCINNATI REDS ON XM?
Major League Baseball regulations prohibit us from broadcasting Reds games on XM Channel 173. You will be able to hear Cincinnati Reds games on another XM Channel. While all the games are heard, only Reds homes games will be the 700WLW broadcasts featuring Marty Brennaman, Thom Brennaman, Ray Brantley and Joe Nuxhall.

Just figuring Griffey won't play more than 100 games, Conine's 170,000 years old, Hamilton's an unproven long shot, and Freel is going to run through a wall or two. Just hedging my bets so I don't have to watch Bubba Crosby.
