Thought I was going to be quick enough to start a thread, but was a second off.

Interesting to see Phillips lead off. I wonder if that is the direction Narron might be thinking if Hamilton starts to force himself into the line-up when the games are for real.

Really pleased that Reds are allowing a webcast of this.

Just spent 1/2 hour on the phone with Gameday tech support and finally have the webcast straightened out. Considering I was an audio subscriber the last few years with no problems on mlb.com, it boggles the mind that all of a sudden there are now issues.

At any rate, glad to have a computer listening option...

Conine has a lower back strain, maybe a lingering injury that lands him on DL to start the season, opening an extra spot on the team.

Like I said it was no big deal as I was going to renew anyway. It was a different story when Direct TV did that with my NFL package, I was not happy.

You just know in 5 years there will be thousands of people getting charged for a Gameday Audio sub that have no idea. The guy that thought of this "automatically renew" scam probably got a nice little bonus.

As a righty hitting first baseman? Not me, I'll take Conine.

The problem with Conine is all this talk about him playing the outfield. His main role should be a platoon first baseman. I think he's a pretty good choice for that spot. A low cost, one year, platoon veteran.

I agree with you. I think Conine brings something to the table as part of a one year tandem at first base (with some work in the outfield). He'll have to produce, but I'm not convinced he's not able to do that. Plus, it seems like many players have a bit of a boost playing at GABP. I'll take that boost for one year. We'll see.

I wouldn't say "doesn't like". I'd phrase it "doesn't expect much". I honestly don't expect much offensively from Bellhorn or Conine. Bellhorn's positives are versatility on the infield and he's a switch-hitter. Conine is a better RH hitter but he doesn't help at all defensively. Especially if Narron misuses him and gives him time in the OF. At the end of the day, I don't see either of them making or breaking the Reds season.

membengal
03-05-2007, 02:43 PM
It's not that I "don't like" Conine, it's that I don't trust the Reds and Narron to limit him to where he would be most effective, platoon at 1b. The thought of him in the OF makes my itchy. In a very bad way.

membengal

Force out on the next guy, Helms cut down at second. Gonzalez for some reason didn't flip the ball to Phillips, taking it himself to the bag, apparently costing a chance at the DP. Stewart and McCoy note that Gonzalez and Phillips talked about it after the play.

I agree that it's the outfield thing that bothers. Still, we here at Redszone tend to make pretty decisive judgments (good or bad) on guys without giving things a chance to play out. I just think Conine has a limited purpose on the team, fits it well, doesn't cost a lot, so let's see how it works out.

Over the past five years they've been roughly the same hitter vs. LHPs. Both were good in 2002 and 2004 (though Bellhorn was better), both were pretty bad the other three years (Bellhorn was worse in 2006 and 2003, Conine was worse in 2005). Frankly, given age and recent history, I'd think Bellhorn's more likely to do more damage to LHPs.
