Anyone got the 411 on Santos? Wasn't he a decent starter a few years back? I seem to remember him having decent stuff and I'm wondering whether he's more of a legit candidate for #5 starter or closer than we realized.

santos pitched decently for the buco's as the 5th starter just didn't provide them many innings thats why they let him go

Personally, I don't see much in the way of upside...high HR rates, runs (earned or no) allowed in bunches, mediocre GB%, and lots of baserunners. Was strafed badly enough in Pittsburgh last season; I don't foresee success pitching in our ballpark especially considering the ghastly .361/.412/.558 line he allowed to righties last season.

His historical reverse splits (.255/.328/.417 vs LHB, .311/.367/.493 vs RHB from the last 3 seasons) and a poor handful of innings out of the bullpen last season suggest he wouldn't handle a bullpen role well, and that is the primary role for the fifth man until mid-May.

Santos hasn't been effective since his rookie year in Detroit. Maybe he can turn into an effective reliever for us.

from reading articles from last season from the Pirates web-site, i'd say no...he's very Ramon Ortiz like in that regard.

Righties "pound" him. That's always promising.

Santos so far this ST looks like D. Wise (from '06 ST) but a pitcher's version. I wouldn't be getting my hopes up just yet. Pitchers are always considered to be closer to form before the season's beginning. Besides his career splits vs RH hitters is horrendous. I honestly hope he is sent down to Louisville or traded at the peak of his peak performance for whatever we could possibly to get for him (low level prospect maybe). We have too many young guys that could put up the same if not better numbers than Santos with an actual upside ie: Belisle, Livingston, Lizard, Saarlos or, Salmon.
