Who do you think will win the 5th starter job

Kirk Saarlos
Elizardo Rameriz
Matt Belisle
Bobby Livingston
Paul Wilson
Victor Santos
Homer Bailey

I think that it will come down to Saarlos and Livingston.

It will be Saarlos. Santos is merely a blip on the radar but, I would to see them keep Livingston in the pen for when Milton goes down and allow him to step in.

I think Saarloos will be the 5th starter, although that really should be Milton's spot.

Saarloos definitely, but I really like what I've seen from Livingston thus far... Going in my pitching staff would look like this:
1. Harang
2. Arroyo
3. Lohse
4. Milton (until he goes down w/ injury & Homer takes his place)
5. Saarloos

Pen: Coffee, Stanton, Weathers, Bray, Salmon, Cormier, Hermanson/Belisle/Majewski? ( I really hope Herm shows something b/c I feel like he could be the missing link if he returns to anything close to 2005)

I wouldn't mind having him slated in at the 5th spot either. I think the extra time between starts would help with his knee, etc.

It'll never happen though.

DL Lohse and have Saarlos and Belisle both in the rotation, keep the better one when Lohse (and his inflated salary return).

I'd pick EZ or Belisle over anyone in that group, with the edge to EZ based on experience..

I believe that there is gonna have to be a trade coming eventually.

Ideally

1. Harang
2. Arroyo
3. Loshe
4. Belisle
5. Sarloos.

.... with EZ ready in AAA.

So we're trading Milton?

Care to name the mysterious recipient?

I think we might have to look out for Matt Belisle. He wasn't great yesterday, but 3 scoreless. I think I'm in the camp that might like some of these guys over Milton, but we'll just have to see. I worry about Lohse injury. Nice to have so many candidates that might do the job though.

im assuming loshe's injury would have him shelved for awhile so sarloos takes his spot with leaves belisle into the 5th spot and livingston to the pen as the long man

Options, options, options...that's why you'll see Ramirez and Livingston start the season at AAA, for both have options remaining (I believe I'm correct)...assuming good health for Lohse, that leaves Saarloos for the #5 and Belisle for long relief...Wilson and Santos will not be kept (I hope-though it's sad about Wilson)...I'm under the belief that the brass simply doesn't believe Belisle is cut out to be a ML starter, whether for health or stamina or stuff...I actually like him, but I think he's been pigeon-holed as a long man..

After researching, Belisle and Saarloos also have options remaining, but I still contend those guys are looked at as keepers, with Livingston and Ramirez as "needing to further develop"...IMHO

I would guess the yankees. Disatrous Bullpen and Igawa is unknown while Pavano could easily be on the DL again by the end of april. We package together Milton/Cormier and we could possibly pickup a decent package of prospects. IMO

Per Hal McCoy's article in today's DDN (regarding the pitching staff):

Most impressive?

Like so many this spring, Ross didn't hesitate.

"Kirk Saarloos," he said. "I really like his stuff.

Saarloos, I don't think it will be a guy that only pitches good against his own team (Santos from his years with Pittsburgh and Milwaukee)

I would like to see Ramirez in the #5 spot, but I think Saarloos has it about locked up unless he has some really bad games. I ont he otherhand dont want to see Livingston step on the mound in Cincinnati. I am not sold on him being able to get professional hitters out, he had enough troublelast year trying to get AAA guys out with his mediocre stuff.

The way Santos is bouncing around...pitching against his former team might include the whole league before long!

I doubt we'd get a decent package of prospects from the Yankees for Milton, but if they want him, by all means they can have him.

Anything they could give us for Milton is an improvement to keeping Milton on our roster.

Ramirez and Livingston should start the year in AAA due to the fact they both lack talent. Livingston is Michalak version 2007, and Ramirez is barely in the argument for 5th starter. Santos and Belisle are better suited to start before Ramirez.

If there is a health concern closer to Opening Day about Lohse then, and only then, does Ramirez have a remote chance to be the 5th starter.

The 5 spots should be locked up right now...

Harang
Arroyo
Lohse (if healthy)
Milton
Saarloos

And then after that, you should have:
Belisle
Santos
Ramirez
Livingston

I guess Ramirez and Livingston give us more options for the 5th starter, but neither of them are good options.

Any decent prospect would do. The Nationals are so in need of pitching, Kriv should be able to work a deal with them, except for that nasty grievance hanging over the relationship. Kriv may not want anything to do with the Nationals. Fool me twice and all that

Except that Ramirez is a better pitcher than Sarrloos, Santos and Livingston, and has a better track record at the major league level than Belisle as a starter.

Only in your opinion does Ramirez lack talent. his stats from last year state otherwise.

Saarloos has movement on all of his pitches.

Ramirez, not so much.

Last year was Ramirez's first full season, and he hit the wall before 100 IP. For my money, that's not a starter.

Ramirez is suited for either a RHP specialist, or mop up. He just doesn't have the stuff or the endurance to be a starter.

TRF

No, he didn't hit the wall. He injured his shoulder, then was HORRIBLY managed by Boone errrrr Narron. after that.

Not the same thing at all.

i'm sticking with Belise! His last outting of 5 SO innings I believe puts him in a great spot. At least it doesn't look like Wilson is going to earn a spot. Our AAA starters should be sweet!

Yeah, but Milton and/or Lohse may be out of it by then as well....hopefully we won't have a problem of having to use all of these guys by seasons end and our season goes well, but with the track record of most of them, well....who knows.

He also has a nice history of suck...in one of the easiest pitchers parks in baseball. Can someone explain to me the fascination with this guy?
