I was thinking more along the lines of "before his contract is up".

I'm going to be paying much more attention to him this year.

Yes he was, but minor league guys still play in some games/make some road trips...

Janish will start the year in Chatanooga, I'm assuming...he's promising, but I don't think Gonzalez is keeping the seat warm just yet...

Now we'll see what he's made of a little bit more than facing say the Pirates. [Not sure he has faced them, just using them as an example]

He already cut through a potent BoSox lineup with only 3 hits in 5ip. Hopefully, he can replicate that.

Exactly, that was a line-up against Boston last Saturday that had Ortiz, Ramirez and some of their other big sticks. His perforance was nothing to sneeze at.

Considering Paul Janish turns 25 in October and will most likely spend the season in AA , I really don't see him as the future Reds everyday shortstop. His future in the majors (if he has one) will most likely be as a utility man.

Lineup change from Trent:

We've got a lineup change for the Redlegs that will be reflected above, but described here: Hatteberg scratched with a groin injury. Hamilton will move to second in the order and Javier Valentin will play at first and bat sixth.

Agreed. He could also pitch in blowouts.

I suppose it's possible that he could have an offensive 'splosion this season and play his way into the starting picture, but that's a longshot. If he were that highly regarded by the organization, they would have signed more of a stopgap SS and not multiple years of Alex Gonzalez.

Doc. Scott

Good point, especially if Valeika continues to develop as he has.

From Baseball Prospectus:

-Don't Believe The Hype: Shortstop Chris Valaika had a stunning debut last summer, earning Pioneer League MVP honors with a .324/.387/.520 line and putting together a league record 32-game hitting streak. He'll be bumped up to High A this year, and needs to show a more patient approach, and more importantly reverse some of the scouting reports that project an eventual move to second base.
---

I personally have no problem with a future second baseman who can hit a little, but I think BP was just reacting to Valaika's surprise capturing of the league MVP, etc. The other neat thing about Chris is that he's a bit younger than your average '06 college draftee (such as Parker, Stubbs, Dorn, or Turner), not turning 22 until August of this year. Those other four guys will all be 23 by the end of the '07 calendar year.

Which, frankly, was as annoying as it gets. Why not plan for your top four pitchers being decent? Why plan for one of them to be the execrable Milton, and hold back Belisle or Saarloos to clean up his mess? Why not play for, I don't know, NO MESS?

You are correct that it was a very small sample size, but if he can replicate his stats as a Red to a full season, he may be able to post a sub 4.00 ERA. His K:BB was very nice, and he limited the HRs. Now that was the best he has ever pitched in his career, so I expect him to regress a bit, but he should be at worst an average starter IMO.

He also had a .342 BAPIP last season. That's not likely to continue as he has basically no control over it.

If he maintains his solid K:BB and decent HR numbers, that ERA is almost guaranteed to come down. Obviously, there is a small sample size here, so it's hard to put a lot of weight on last year's numbers only, but he was much, much better than the stats indicate.

Right, because those relievers under their mid-thirties are constantly having their knees knocking when they enter the game in the ninth inning with nobody on base.

Big-league teams are constantly viewing the closer's role like a catch-22: you can't close without being proven, and you can't prove without closing.

Yeah, but the first half of last year was some of the worst pitching in his entire career. He is at least entering the typical peak period age-wise.

The thing is that he's worked so many innings as a youngster, throwing 171, 165, 167, 175, 181, 201, 194, and 179 innings at ages 19 through 26. That is a heck of a lot.
