I knew the game on Saturday or Sunday after he made an error that he'd be gone. It was precisely the sort of thing that Narron & Krivsky are trying to eliminate.

I've always been a little puzzled as to the angst at which guys like Bellhorn, Cosby, Wise, etc bring to the RZ...clearly, as the last week has shown guys are needed for games when we need to rest a player or someone(s) is injured...we need spare parts at Louisville in some cases...its the end of spring training, now we cut loose the spare change and go to work...

As for the others, Castro is a defensive specialist infielder (FWIW) and Moeller is a defensive specialist catcher...sexy or not, these moves fit the profile of what Krivsky believes helps teams win...I really do think if we had, let's say Lenny Harris instead of Javy Valentin as the "pinch-hitter deluxe" that we'd have much less problem with Moeller...I prefer for our 2nd catcher to be good defensively (and yes, I'm basing that assessment off of what I've read, I don't tangibly know that for sure)...

A pinch hitter instead of Javy would be acceptable and there would be less issue with Moeller. Problem is, Javy isn't a proto typical pinch hitter, so no one is happy about it.

I have no problems with Moeller on this team. I DO have problems with Moeller AND Valentin on this team.

If we carry a third catcher, I'm going to cry. I think Deno is the obvious choice, especially since we're being told that the team is trying to gravitate its way towards pitching, speed, and defense (I love traditionalm NL style baseball!). There's not point in having Moeller if we've already got Javy. And Deno adds defense and speed to an outfield that lacks it, not to mention depth for when Griffey takes his first trip to the DL.

What am I missing....If the starting outfield is Dunn, Freel and Jr; that would leave Deno and Hamiltion on the bench as pinch hitters. Both run and hit better than Javy. (if the starting outfield includes either Wonder Boy or Deno then you would still have 2 quality outfielders, hitters and runners on the bench) They just don't know how to put on the catcher's gear. Louiville being a quick 2 hour drive away, if one catcher goes down another could be in Cincy the next day. If its an away game that's another issue but lots of teams deal with that issue. If one of the outfielders goes down the same thing applies. Why carry 3 catchers just to have Javy as a pinch hitter. Again, what am I missing.

The fact that Hatteberg can catch makes carrying 3 catchers even more ridiculous. If they are in that big of a bind they can throw him back there for the rest of the game until they can bring somebody else in the next day.

I'm sure if they hang around Narron enough they will be able to learn how to Put On The Catcher's Equipment The Right Way. ;)

Freel has also been said to be able to catch.

We have 5! AWESOME!

How in the world have teams survived all these years carrying only 2 catchers? Didn't they know they were running the razors edge over disaster?

I think it would be an absolute mistake carrying 3 catchers. The argument has been that Valentin is the PH. I like to think with a bench of Hamiton and Deno you have both a lefty and righty ph who both have speed and can serve as a pinch runner. Bothy Hamilton and Deon can also be used as an infielder because if they are inserted into a game Freel can take over the corresponding infield spot. IMO carrying 3 catchers will only take away a roster spot from not only a deserving player but may also hurt the team.

The move that makes the most sense is to cut Valentin and Conine. I'd keep Moeller as the second catcher, move Hatteburg to the primary PH, and put Votto at 1B under the tutelage of Mr. Hat.

I'd offer Castro a job right now as a coach at Chatt. He would be invaluable mentoring guys like Janish and Valaika.

But hey, that's just me.

I'm perplexed by the hatred of Bellhorn here. I know many a poster have claimed they would've liked the Reds to pick him up in the past. He can still draw a walk and if he can hit even .240 he'd have some worth.

Why keep Moeller over Valentin?

Pitchers seem to like Moeller. He's got a decent rep as a receiver, though he's not spectacular defensively. The team is overloaded with LH hitters anyway.

Someones gotta be able to play defense at catcher. I don't trust Ross outside of calling a game.

His bat maybe worth it, but "defensively" like Trent said "the man owns three gloves..or stands at three positions."

I believe that Moeller is out of options so he would go on the waiver wire or claim free agency, for the same reason as Bubba Crosby. Since he has had a good ST, chances are he would not clear waivers and someone else would pick him up. However, if a team waits until after the season starts and other teams lock up their 40 man roster the chances might be better to clear waivers. I don't think the intent was to carry 3 catchers this year, but I can see it happening for a little while.

Could Valentine or Moeller play 1st? If so, makes the Conine signing even more of a travesty.

He's played first before but you kind of have to like a fielder with the mobility of a rosin bag combined with the height of the pitchers mound. :p:
