Lineup just came up on Trent's blog:

Freel
Phillips
Dunn
Encarnacion
Griffey
Conine
Gonzalez
Ross
Arroyo

Interesting that 2/3 and 4/5 get flip-flopped today.

Looks like Jerry wanted to make the top of the lineup RH heavy vs a LHP, but still wanted to split up the LH's (Dunn/Griffey) for later in the game.

I can see the rational. Is that scary?

I like Phillips in the 2 hole better than 3.

I was never comfortable with BP in the three hole (even though NEVER is a strong word for just one game.) I think he is a dangerous hitter with his outstanding bat speed, but I like him in the 6 slot much better where there isn't as much pressure as hitting third. Like him better hitting 2nd than 3rd, though.

If you bat Dunn 3rd or 4th then there is a greater chance of having one or more runners on base when Dunner hits a home run.

I like this lineup better than day 1, but I would bat Ross ahead of Gonzalez.

At least he's matching well, I don't hate Jerry I can see the method though I don't agree with it most of the time (it's the fun of being a fan) but anyone who watched the game Monday saw the Lefty success and the righty struggle against Carlos Z, with the exeption of Phillips walks.
I say this will work better than the RLRLRL etc against Lilly.
That said, Griffey 5th!!!! WTF?!?!

The Cubs may have to scramble for a Wednesday starter. As I turn this in, Ted Lilly is still their scheduled starter, but he's also been fighting the flu since the team's weekend in Vegas. He's been on medication and fluids, but even if he makes the start, expect Lou Piniella to go to the bullpen more quickly than he might normally. Weather in Cincinnati is looking dicey, with Weather.com telling me that there are 20-30 mph winds with 40 mph gusts, plus a gametime temperature around 30. Spring in the Midwest is always an adventure, but with an ailing pitcher and Adam Dunn, this could be one worth watching. Still, despite the drama of the moment, there's no real long-term issue here for Lilly.

AtomicDumpling
04-04-2007, 05:48 PM
I think the reason Narron wants to alternate LH and RH hitters is not due to the opposing starting pitcher, but rather to make it less advantageous for the enemy to utilize situational lefties at the end of the game. The lefty would only be effective against one batter rather than two or three consecutive LH hitters -- Dunn, Griffey, Hatteberg, Hamilton.

Cyclone792

I know it's windy back there but is the wind blowing out?

In the city right now winds are mostly blowing from the WNW around 15-20 mph with gusts approaching 30 mph. The downtown buildings, stadium itself, and river valley swirls may alter that a bit, but if the wind is blowing from the WNW in the park, then it's blowing out to left and left center.

The pitcher has something to do with it. It is why Conine is in the line-up. I agree with your lefty specialist analysis but if a righty is on the mound tonight then you'd have Monday's line-up which also covered the R-L thing.

Monday's line-up against a righty:

R, L, R, L, R, L, R, R

Today against a lefty:

R, R, L, R, L, R, R, R

Two good line-ups by Narron. Nothing to complain about.

Dunn Hit well. Why can the managers just not leave him alone. He seems comfortable in the 2 hole. LEAVE him there. Gezzz.

Last season, Adam Troy Dunn batted .317 in the 2 hole and .218 in the 3 hole. The only problem with declaring these stats definitive is that I believe he batted in the 3 hole more often during his late season slump after Griffey was out, so that might put a dampner on his stats there.

As for Hatte, here's his line against lefties last year: .231/.333/.346/.679

His batting average was as high as it was last year because he only had 78 ABs (88 PAs) against lefties. He hit .302 against righties.

Well, that's good, because it's lefty hitters that kill Arroyo (.498 slugging last season). So if he just slows down everything so they pull it all to right, the wind will blow the ball to the deepest part of the ballpark. Yeah, that's it.

Cyclone792

That plate appearance right there is an example of why Alex Gonzalez has a sub .300 career on-base percentage. He lunged at a horrible pitch down near the dirt, and not surprisingly the result is a weak pop out in foul territory.
