Who was the 1st ever free agent the Reds signed? For some reason I always thought it was Larry Biittner, but I was recently told it was Paul Blair. Thanks in advance for the help.

I always thought it was Biitner too. But Blair played for the Reds in 1979 so maybe it was him.

Which brings up another question. Why on earth did the Reds sign Larry Biitner?

The difference is that Paul Blair was released by the Yankees in April, 1979 and we signed him the following month. Biitner was the first free agent we signed whose contract had expired and who was free to sign with any club.

Thanks for clearing that ups. This pretty much is all the proof I need.

I just remember the Reds making such a big deal that they had FINALLY entered the free agent world and signed Larry Biitner and Mike Vail. :beerme:
