Time to rely on Matt Belisle to take care of business again!

The Reds lineup looks fairly strong.......B. Phillips is where he belongs, and it's nice to see Gonzo back in there!

Some of those guys have killed Bush in the past. His ERA at GABP last year alone was over 16. Of course, to counter that, you have Bill Hall. In 6 ABs against Belisle, he has 2 hits, both HRs.

I think this Reds lineup should score a bunch of runs.

The Brewers have only one left-hander in the bullpen (Brian Shouse, who was once traded for Enrique Cruz, who was just DFAed by the Reds today), and I think that makes this a great lineup.

:p:

Cue EdE to start complaining about lack of playing time.

Then cue Freel's complaints.

Then cue Hamilton to get involved as the nice guy, saying "I'm just glad for the opportunity." Then complaining when he's only playing 4 games per week in the 2nd half.

Haven't we seen this before?

Haven't we seen this before?

No, this is different. If EdE sits consistently 3-5 times a week, or if Hamilton fails to play well, there will be complaints, otherwise the fact that Freel spells EdE and BP is the correct path to take.

Actually, I'd like to see Freel be the everyday catcher. That would answer most problems this team has (except for the defense part of catcher).

I can live with that lineup. The Reds need another good performance from Belisle tonight.

Then cue suggestion of trading Jr to the Yankees for Phillip Hughes and Humberto to free up an outfield slot and money.
Then cue suggestion of throwing Milton in the mix to "sweeten" the pot.

Anyone else surprised that JN didn't try a righty at clean-up between Dunn and Griffey? Obviously no righty in this lineup should hit 4th, but it wouldn't have surprised me to see BP in there.

Hamilton, Dunn, and Griffey batting together in the lineup has to be pretty scary for Bush.

I really hope Freel has a good game tonight, really. However, I have watched every game this year with the exception of two (Tivo ROCKS!) and he is the guy who is driving me absolutely nuts. He seems lost at the plate -- swinging away 2-0 when the pitcher can't find the plate and we need a baserunner -- and in the field, if I have to watch him make one more routine play into a sliding, "I want to get a Webgem" circus act, I may just lose it. Add in a few baserunning blunders and you have a guy, billed as the "play the game the right way guy" who is playing with his head up his hindquarters. Granted, Edwin's bat has looked slow at times and other guys have looked lost (Ross for example), but Freel is just driving me to drink. Plus, how do you sit Edwin after he FINALLY seemed to be coming out of his funk last night. Just seems odd to sit him tonight when he finally seems to be getting back on track.

Then again, it is just one game...maybe I just need to chill. :D

The announcers were saying last night that once Josh stops treating every at-bat like he has an 0-2 count and really starts looking for his pitch, we could really start seeing the power. They cited his batting practice performance. I guess 3 HR's in 18 ABs (if memory serves) isn't enough. ;)

How many walks does he need to have... Hamilton has been pretty selective so far.

Stamford
04-17-2007, 05:29 PM
I don't think they were saying he isn't selective. I think they were saying that he hasn't really "cut loose" with his swing -- that he is erring on the side of making contact and taking a more defensive stroke. In fact, I think they were paying him a compliment -- saying "hey, just wait until he starts looking for a pitch in his zone and really taking a full cut." Sorry if I didn't make that clear with my post.

That would be too easy, though Freel should really sit. How on earth he takes away at bats from anybody, I have no clue.

He's Chris Sabo without the bat.

I do like the idea of him catching, though.

I have this sinking feeling that Hamilton is going to be treated like he has to fight for a spot all year.

Why not take the reigns off and see what he can do full-time?

Actually, I'd like to see Freel be the everyday catcher. That would answer most problems this team has (except for the defense part of catcher).

Other than the fact that he wears down fast enough when he plays the OF, such that catching should wear him down after a game or two, and other than the fact that he's probably caught only a few innings in his life, it sounds like a wonderful idea.

I agree, even some of his outs have been well hit.

But Freel adds the speed and possible table-setting factor early in the game, and EE would be a more potent late RBI threat if the right PH opportunity arises.

Encarnacion sitting out tonight doesn't bother me too much. If he sits three games per week now, then I'll be a bit irritated, but I'll give Narron the benefit of the doubt for now ... until it happens (if it happens).

I've always believed that most players should get a day off for rest/reset the mind around every three weeks or so, and that includes guys such as Encarnacion and Phillips. Even if they sit once out of every dozen games or so, I'm fine with that provided the replacement is at least ok. Freel qualifies in that sense.

I'd love to see some sort of rotation where both Encarnacion and Phillips get one game off every two weeks with Freel filling in for those days. If all players were healthy thoughout the season, Encarnacion and Phillips would still play around 145 games each season, and Freel would log around 30 games in the infield.

Then give Griffey one day off per week and give Hamilton one day off per week with Freel filling in for them during those games. Griffey and Hamilton would still log around 140 games, and Freel gets 40 more games himself. Heck, give Adam Dunn a game off per month and let Freel fill in for that game too. That's six more games for Freel. Even give Dunn one or three starts at first base per month and give Freel even more games in the outfield, which in that case is sort of like Freel giving the 1B platoon a rest. That could be another dozen games for Freel.

If that type of system was implemented, then Ryan Freel would start around 90 games per season just as a side-effect of giving players some regular rest. That's not even counting any possible number of injuries where any of those core players may miss a few more games with Freel filling in for those too.

Those are some of the things I would do if I were managing the team. All the core every day players would still be playing basically full-time, and Freel himself would log a ton of plate appearances himself throughout the season.
