Looks like Valentin is going to get less PT now that there are only 2 catchers.

That said, Ross might only be able to break his slump by getting tons of AB.

Oops, just remembered that Ross is Arroyo's personal catcher.

That's true. Everyone should read a game thread on the opponent's forums once, and you'll see how managers are treated. I read the Brewers' game thread from Tuesday night, and they were brutal to Yost. Astros' threads have been ripping Garner right and left. It's the same thing everywhere. It just goes with the territory of being a MLB manager.

Ok, this post isn't going to come by any surprise to anyone...because, well...I'm sure that most of you will agree with me. The thing is, I can't help but wonder why Arroyo has such hard luck when it comes to run support and getting a winning decision. I mean, he could've won 20 games last year if he would've gotten just a bit of backup from the offensive side of things.

Like I said, this isn't anything new...but, when are things going to turn around for this guy? He's already 0-2 this year despite the fact that he's pitched well. I continue to stick by him and remain optimistic every time he takes the mound. In fact, I expect a win every time Arroyo and/or Harrang pitch. It just seems that on the surface the Reds have a starting pitching problem when in fact the team could have had 10-15 more wins last year if the offensive side of things could remain more consistent. But...that's baseball for ya. Just rambling....

On with the thread. GO REDS!

It has occured to me from watching baseball for lo these many years that teams tend not to score as much for their "ace". I remember recently reading something about how Bob Gibson could have easily had another 5 wins if the offense had scored more for him in 1968. As it was, they only scored a little over 2 runs on average for him that year. It was that way with Soto too although some of those Reds teams had an offense that makes this one look like the BRM. Seems Jose Rijo always had problems with his offense scoring for him too. I should look into this more.

Here's one guess at why offenses have problems when their aces are up:

When the season starts, it is the ace of each team squaring off. Assuming they keep the same schedule, then each time the Reds' ace goes, so does the ace of the opposing team. Sure, this is broken up by off days and rain games, but i remember last year that Harang pitched against Carpenter several times.

Just a thought...

That's a good theory. Another pet theory of mine is that the offense knows their ace isn't going to give up a lot of runs so they relax and don't worry about scoring a lot of runs. They score 1 or 2 and figure that'll be enough and they don't need any more runs. Of course your theory is more proveable.

It's the case where the opposing pitcher steps up his game and brings his best. So, expect to see the Houston pitcher's best game of the year.

However, I don't think that will apply today as I think both clubs will score lots of runs. Our first 9-7 game of the year. REDS Win.

Don't blame Dunn there. The pitch sequence by Williams set Dunn up well.

He started Freel with 5 straight fastballs, then walked him on the 6th pitch with a slider. First thing Dunn sees is an 81-mph changeup that he swings and misses on. He then then stands there looking at an 87-mph fastball, apparently fooled. Then after a pickoff attempt and a ball, Dunn whiffed on a slider.
