Go with what works I guess... However, I really like Freel in the lead-off spot so it can move Hamilton down where he actually has R.B.I opportunities...

Prediction for tonight: Reds-5 Cardinals-3

Dunn- HR #5

Of course, starting Freel and Hamilton sends Griffey to the bench.

Unless Freel goes to third or second, which is a bad idea, you'll only see both in the lineup when Dunn or Griffey are hurt or resting, or sitting vs. a LH pitcher.

Looper has pitched pretty well so far.

His DIPS ERA is 3.66, so he hasn't pitched nearly as well as it appears from his low ERA.

His K rate is poor and is being saved by having a good HR rate and a very good BABIP.

He's likely to follow the Wainwright route (who was having similiar success, but was very BABIP lucky), and see his numbers rise in the near future. Let's hope that future is tonight.

Having said that, Looper has pitched much better than I would have imagined.

Just talking BABIP here but someone look at Daniel Cabrera and Eric Bedard's lines.

Cabrera- 1-0 26.1IP 26Ks 7BB

Bedard- 3-2 28IP 31K 11BB

Cabrera has a 4.10 ERA
Bedard 6.11

Can someone take a deeper look at those lines and explain or, point me in the direction where I can find some of the "newer" stats (ie VORPS, BABIP, RC, Win Shares etc etc) and what not.

Thanks a lot

True, but his DIPS ERA is the same as his actual of 5.04. So, he should have given up less hits, but they calculate that he should have given up the same number of runs.

In DIPS calculation, there's a number of ways to be lucky or unlucky. BABIP is just one of the ways. Pecentage of runs that actual score per hit/walk aloowed, and % of runs given up (or saved) by the bullpen factors in also. So, while Wainwright has been BABIP unlucky, he's (apparently) been lucky in other areas, so his luck has been neutral.

Bedard has a BABIP of .377, so has been unlucky. He still has a DIPS of 4.49, because he has a high walk and HR rate. But he's better than it looks, and a good bet to get better.

Cabrera has a DIPS of 2.36, with a BABIP of .367. he doesn't have a bad walk or HR rate, so he's a very good bet to get better if he continues to pitch as well as he has.

Good eye on these guys CoolGuy.They are a good bet to pitch well in the near future.

# Talking to Josh Hamilton before the game, he said when he moved to right field last night, some fan yelled out, "My name is Josh Hamilton and I'm addicted to drugs." Dips, pips, ships, loose lips, and rosehips.

Throw them all out the window.

The REDS hit 5 homeruns in the opening game of the series at Busch last August, then couldn't score a run the next day and lost the day after that, too.

They'll be facing a pitcher who's been tough as hell so far this year against everyone he's faced. He'll probably step up his game tonight and give up only one run or none.

I hope the REDS are tough with every at-bat, not going down with one pitch, and really dig in and give Arroyo a lead.

It sounds like some people are saying that pitchers have little or no control over whether or not balls hit in fair territory result in hits - which I'm not sure I agree. For instance if you're constantly inducing weak grounders and lazy fly balls, you must be doing something right, since those are always supposed to be routine plays regardless of the fielder. If you locate properly you shouldn't have to worry about too many hard hit balls that basically require web gem caliber plays in order to become outs.

Then again it wasn't until more recently that I started hearing more about that kind of stuff...

I was at Saturday night's game against the Phillies...around the 7th inning or so the fans got the wave going. You could tell Hamilton was enjoying it because he would follow the wave around the stadium inbetween pitches. After it went around the ballpark three or four times he finally decided to join in by throwing up his arms when it reach the right field seats. I got a good laugh out of it...you can tell that he just loves being on the ballfield.

Let's assume that two of the Reds' strong suits are starting pitching and the power hitting outfielders. Then Hamilton, Dunn, and Griffey hitting early (and often) at or near the top of the lineup, potentially (at least) will help build an early lead while the starter is holding the opposition down.

Then later, when the staff needs the strongest defense -- when the weakish bullpen is in the game -- the Reds play their three young "centerfielders": Hamilton, Freel, and Hopper (as they did Tuesday night)to protect the league.

If were only that easy!

Why will runs be hard to get tonight? Because Looper has been tremendous all season and all of Spring Training. He's had nothing but great starts since March 1st. On top of that, he's going to step it up even further tonight after the Cardinals got hammered last night like Carpenter stepped it up last year on August 18th. And, he knows he's facing Arroyo, the REDS' best pitcher, so he's going to step it up for that reason, too.

Over a career it's all about wins. One year's wins or lack of can be because of run support. But over a career, if you consistently lose as many as you win, then you're pitching to the level of your competition. And that's what Ben Sheets does.
