Favorite Reds Baseball Card of all time

I thought it would be neat for those of us who have collected baseball cards over the years to list what their favorite card(s) is.

My favorite is a 1975 Topps Pete Rose card. I got it in my first pack of cards ever when I was 5. My Dad bought my brother and I a pack and a love affair was born. BTW, he got a Will McEneny card and never really got into collecting.

My favorite Reds card of all time. I remember opening the pack purchased from King Kwik and screaming. My mom almost wrecked as she thought I had hurt myself. I was 7 years old.

I also love the '76 Pete Rose.

The 1st one I remember most is a 1959 Gus Bell. Thats the year I started my collection. Which like a dummy I sold in 1980.

My first gambling experience was flipping cards against the wall while living in Amelia, OH as a kid in the early 70s. It was tough to get someone to put up Rose, Bench or any other member of the Machine to flip for. Back then we didn't know that the bent corners killed the value of the card.:)

nice selection. I remember they use to list this card in beckett just because it had eric on it, tony's cards werent listed this late in his career. they would list it as w/ eric davis. my favorite is 1985 fleer eric davis. i just love the amount of red on the card. I first became a Reds fan in 1966, and Pete Rose was my favorite player. My favorite card will probably always be a 1966 Rose, of which I got several. I can still remember how happy I was the first time I opened up a pack of Topps cards and found a Rose card there. I still have all my Rose cards.

Here is an image of the first Reds baseball card I collected: 1974 Johnny Bench. I currently have two copies of it; one is the American Topps card and the other is the similar (but not exact) Canadian O.P.C. card. Add the fact that Bench is perhaps my favourite Reds player of all time and its no surprise that I have a soft spot for these cards.

(NOTE: that is not my scan - that comes from eBay. I really need to scan my cards again).
That, as you might know, is a Nick Esasy Topps rookie, 1984.
For the late '80s and early '90s, I worked in a baseball card shop with one of the worst business-sense men who were ever in the biz.
Meanwhile, there were a couple of brothers who cut hair in Piqua who seemed to consistently have this guy's number. They bought Andy Van Slyke cards from him cheap, and sold them back to him at higher prices before Van Slyke's career tanked. This was one of many examples.
When Nick went to Boston, they gobbled his cards off of Tony for literally pennies on the dollar. They bought literally hundreds of them - especially the more expensive 1984 Fleer card.
Of course, Tony wanted nothing more than to get back at the barber brothers for constantly getting the better of him.
One bright, sunny April day, his chance came. That day, the brothers bought in all of their Nick Esasky cards. All of them. Tony was thrilled. He traded for them, he sold for them - he traded them 200 black and white Bo Jackson Score cards that were going for a bundle at the time. He literally gave away hundreds of dollars in cards and cash for those Esasky cards. He was bouncing on his stool in attempts to hide his joy as I watched the transaction, my mouth open in disbelief.
Finally, the barber brothers left the store. Tony turned to me and said "Did you see that? I finally got even with those guys - I whacked them! I whacked them good! I got all their Esasky cards, he's with Atlanta and he's going to have his best season yet - you watch."
Finally, I snapped out of my stupor. "Tony...you know Nick Esasky is probably out for the year because he has vertigo, right? His career might be over."
Tony almost fell off the stool. I won't repeat what he said, but it was not kind, and he vowed to never deal with the barber brothers again.
To top it off, he did, later that year - when the brothers sold all of their B&W Bo's to him at full market value...shortly before Score announced they were upping their production for cards that year.
One year later, he was out of business. The Shelby County sheriff's department confiscated the cards he left in the shop - most which consisted of 1988 Donruss and literally more than 200,000 1988 Upper Deck Tim Belcher cards he got in another transaction.

I preferred the Donruss '85.

The month that Eric Davis was on the cover of Sports Illustrated after his 3 GrandSlams in May of '87, I paid for an entire trip to the Bay Area by taking down with me about 6 '85 Donruss Rookies, 8 '86 Fleer Rookies and 15 '86 Topps rookies. Walked into a Sports Card Convention, sold them for high book, and had a really good time on Eric Davis. That was the peak of his career as injuries took their toll (and Paul Brown wouldn't let the REDS put grass into Riverfront...Damn him! :angry: )


For about 5 years ('86-'90), I carried an '87 Eric Davis card in my wallet as inspiration as I always loved his fortitude. And, in '86 I placed an '86 Pete Rose card in my sock for inpiration because he always hustled and never gave up for anything anytime.

They did inspire me.

Jefferson, mine would be the 68 Topps Bench, the split rookie card. Ihad wanted one for a few years when I was little, started collecting in 82. Christmas 86, my dad surprised me and gave me one he picked up at a show. How many on here still collect? I also like that Larkin Fleer card someone listed above^!

I still collect a little. I usually go on ebay and search for deals. My best cards are a Frank Robinson rookie, 1933 Eppa Rixey, and 34 Ernie Lombardi.

Mine was the '87 Topps Eric Davis.

I remember as soon as they released those cards in packs at the store, my Papaw taking me up there and getting a pack and on the trip back to his house I asked him who he thought was going to be good that year. His first response was Eric Davis, and low and behold as soon as he says that, I flip over the next card in my pack and it is Eric Davis. I went nuts.

Heh, hey be fair now. Jefferies probably failed because he couldn't handle New York, he did end up with a pretty nice career. Oh sure he was pretty much the Next Big Thing coming up, and legitimatly so it wasn't the Mets hype.

But yeah, that deal smacks of someone not having true business sense and getting caught up in the late-80's [Beldar Conehead voice]mass quanities[/Beldar Conehead voice] of rookie cards craze.
