Too bad Hamilton's not in, but I'm not surprised, or upset at the move (with the lefty going).....he can always come in later.

Of course not having Dunn OR Hamilton in there makes very little sense. Sure, Dunn could strike out 4 times, but you never know what can happen if he gets a hold of one, and the same goes for Hamilton, who I don't think will strike out as much.

There's no reason ever both of them should sit on the same day.

membengal
04-26-2007, 11:03 AM
Well that was certainly one direction for Narron to go. Was kinda hoping to give Hamilton a shot at a lefty who isn't at the top of the league in terms of stuff or speciality. Oh well.

Usually LaRussa is a master of day game specials in terms of line-ups, so it may look like a glorified Memphis/Louisville baseball game today...

We are effectively sitting 2 regulars.

Besides bring poor defense to the game, Valentine's usual hitting vs. LH pitching is about the samw as what Ross is doing this year. Which is bad. Only start Valentine against PH pitching.

Quite the creative way to improve his dysfunctional bench, maybe Mr. Narron is trying to send a message, a message to his boss, the master planner, the GM of the team. ;)

Bashing Narron, WK, et al. doesn't add much to the board, so I'll restrain myself. Suffice it to say, I was an ardent Narron supporter until recently.

Although, pinch hitting for Arroyo last night wasn't all that bad. At least he was just trying to get Freel on base for the top of the lineup in an attempt to get the lead. You have to rely on the bully at some point...Just not sure if he is using Saarloos and Coffey in the correct spots. I guess when the bully isn't doing its job, no one is hitting, etc. it makes the manager an easy target. However, his lineup construction (especially today) leaves a lot to be desired.

I guess I'm just frustrated like most other Reds fans who invest any amount of time watching and listening to this team.

I will preface that I do like EE. But there is no way you can say he is one of the best 3 players on this team right now. In the last 7 days (he's had 22 ABs) and he is OPS .399. I am with the camp that wants to send him to Louisville to get out of this slump.

Narron seems set with Weathers in the ninth, but he should stick to Stanton in the eighth of winning games. Probably last night with Pujois he wanted a righty so he went to Saarloos, who is really miscast as a late inning reliever.

Bottom line is that the team does not have good bullpen options for the late innings. Coffey's ineffectiveness and Bray's injury have hurt.

As for today, no problem using a bunch of righty bench hitters for this game agains Keisler, although Castro hitting sixth is certainly novel. But where is EE? Sitting against a lefty? He was hit in the hand with a pitch the other night, maybe he is hurt. Otherwise, an odd time to rest EE.

Wow.. after winning game 1, I thought we were a lock to win 2 games in this series.. With this lineup, I doubt it.

Why would you not start EdE against a mediocre lefty like Keisler? Castro at 3b??

I've got a feeling Lohse is going to give up a HR or two, it's inexcusable for Jerry to sit EdE and Dunn.

What a joke, Castro and Hopper starting the same game... Yeah, that will help the offense

I thought Narron made the right move pinch hitting for Arroyo last night. We needed a baserunner, we had Freel on the bench.

It's not Narron's fault that the bullpen sucks.. Arroyo can't pitch a complete game every time out.

I would've liked to see EdE get a chance to get back on track against a very mediocre lefty.

I agree, EdE is not one of our three best players at this point. However, he's a big part of our future (either as a player or trade bait). It's imperative to get him back on track. Thus, you start him against a mediocre lefty and hope for the best.

It's not as if Castro is an upgrade to a slumping EdE..

I was watching the game in a bar, and I thought it was a great move.

This team is offensively challenged. It was a tie game late in the innning.

Why not let Freel hit? If you let Arroyo hit, you are basically giving away an out.

I think most ML managers would've done exactly what Narron did last night. When you manage, you can't go under the assumption that you have no one in the pen to pitch the 8th inning.. Narron had to pull out all the stops to get the win in that inning.

This may be the worst lineup in the history of lineups. AG batting 5th (even though he's hot now), Castro 6th, BP still out of place in the 2-hole, no Dunn, no EE, no Hamilton. That's horrific.

Seriously though, I understand benching players today vs. a LHP cause we can't hit them. But why bench EdE? He typically murders LHP and is in a slump. Who knows, getting ABs vs. LHP and then getting some hits might break him out of his slump. Also, Dunn hits LHP pretty well. Put him in there instead of Griffey.

I agree. Whoever decided that the bullpen was "fixed" made a grave error and they deserve a lot of blame for these bullpen explosion losses. I think most of that blame falls on Wayne. Jerry may have had some input (as well as other advisors), but ultimately, it's the GM's final decision.

From Fay:

"Get a little energy on the field and see what happens with it," Narron said. "We're not exactly killing left-handed pitching."

The Reds, in fact, enter today exactly 2-6 vs. lefties.

The difference in the lineup really is Norris Hopper for Adam Dunn in left and Juan Castro for Edwin Encarnacion at third. Jeff Conine has started every game vs. a lefty.

Phillips out at third. Never make the 1st or 3rd out of an inning at third. Phillips meets that criteria, I guess.

Thats his head messing with him. He doesn't have a ton of experience facing lefties, and I'd be willing to bet his plate approach against lefties right now is "swing at the first thing I can get the bat on" in order to avoid going into the hole and getting rung up on a slider or some other tough breaking ball.

As he gains more confidence in that aspect of his game, he'll start hitting lefties better, IMO.

Of course, I might be totally wrong. Who knows.

Marty's like us! He says, "I don't know why I get upset. If they don't care, why should I?"

Thom feels the same way.

Did he say that on the air?

You have to take the good with the bad with Josh. He's barely played above A ball. If anyone thought he was a finished product they are delusional.
