When Harang starts this year....

* 30 runs in 5 games (6 R/G).

I love Josh Hamilton, but he was out of baseball for four years, and had never played in the major's before this season. He'll certainly have a productive season, but I can't see it happening at this pace all season long.

As he goes around the league more than once, teams will pick up tendencies of his, weaknesses that maybe they can exploit, and it will start to show in his stats.

The key will be to see if he can adjust, which I think he will. He has an incredible eye, and power to the opposite field, both of which should help guard against a prolonged slump.

I love Hamilton, he'll be a great player, but counting on someone that was inactive for four years because of a drug addiction to last the entire season playing at a very high level is asking for a boatload of trouble if nobody else can step up.

So sad that Hamilton and his .368 SLG vs LHP has to hit 3rd. That speaks volumes about this offense.

I believe he started out the season something like 0-9 or 1-9 vs. LH pitchers.

He seems to be getting them now.

Marc D

I'm done doubting the kid, not because of production in a small sample size but because of the quality of AB's I've seen him take.

He has great plate discipline and thats a skill very hard to teach. Hatteberg and Conine are the only two in his class in that regard and they don't have a shred of his power, especially opposite field.

I don't see any prolonged slumps for the same reason as noted above, great plate discipline and the willigness/ability to go the other way. He isn't a sucker for off speed or breaking balls because he trusts his talent and waits a bit longer knowing he doesn't have to pull everything.

The only thing that will derail Hamilton from what I have seen is an injury or a relapse. I'm not the type to buy into hype but he's one of those rare players who live up to it. What he's doing is hard to comprhend.

He's already given the Pirates four runs in less than three innings on the pitching side, plus he cost the Reds a run on offense with a poor bunt. Freel simply is in one of his tired slumps. When he plays more than 3 games in a row he loses all his power and hits ground balls right at em. Time for a rest. Put Hamilton in leadoff since he's adopted that first pitch thing from Freel.

I'm glad to say the Reds offense proved me wrong by showing they could come back today.

The hope now is that Harang can settle down and give us 3 more innings of work with less baserunners in the bottom half of innings. Ironically enough, while Arroyo can't catch a break, Harang already has won a game when he did not pitch well at all. That was against Pitt in fact, time to do it again.

It's not an insult to lump Harang in with Radke and Harnisch. They're amazingly similar pitchers. They all give up the big flies, exhibit good control so they don't have a bunch of guys on when they give up the dinger, aren't stingy with the base hit, but generally give their teams a chance to win. In other words, prototypical #2 pitchers.

I agree that BABIP has less meaning in a smaller sample sixe.

But Harang hasn't given up any HR's on a day when the ball is obviously carrying well. Bays double was a pop, while the other two were line drives.

He may not have pitched great, but he's pitched much better than the actual results.

And he does have a 4 run lead.
