Redlegs-Astros 5.2

HOUSTON -- The roof is open today and it's like a whole different ballpark. Very nice.

Anyway, Josh Hamilton has been named the National League Rookie of the Month, so that's nice.

From MLB

Cincinnati Reds outfielder Josh Hamilton, who led all rookies with six home runs and tied for the lead
among Major League rookies with 13 RBI, has been voted National League Rookie of the Month for April,
while Boston Red Sox left-hander Hideki Okajima, who fanned 17 batters in 12.2 innings pitched, has
earned American League Rookie of the Month honors.
Hamilton also led all rookies with a .609 slugging percentage and posted a .365 on base percentage.
He batted .266 (17-64) with 12 runs, two doubles and a stolen base. This marks the first time that a
member of the Reds has earned the honor since Austin Kearns in May 2002.

No word on the lineup yet, but don't expect to see Edwin Encarnacion there. Yesterday Jerry said he'd likely take a seat against Oswalt -- against whom he doesn't have a hit in 8 at-bats and has struck out 5 times.

Here's the Reds numbers vs. Oswalt
Castro 0-6 3Ks
Conine 0-6 3Ks
Dunn 12-52 (.231) with 1 HR, 11 bb, 15 Ks
Encarnacion 0-8 5 Ks
Freel 7-21 (.333) 1 HR, 5 bb, 3 Ks
Gonzalez 4-10 (.400) 1 HR 1 K
Griffey 6-28 (.214) 1 bb, Ks
Hatteberg 5-11 (.455) 2 bb
Phillips 3-9 (.333)
Ross 1-4 (.250) 2 Ks
Valentin 2-9 (.222) 1 bb 2 Ks

And it looks like a long night, 'cause Blogger supersucks today

(By the way, EE is 0-8 against Oswalt with 5Ks if I'm not mistaken...Freel's actually hit him)

I think it is better to have hamilton bat lower in the lineup. he seems to do better there maybe less pressur.

The Reds don't have much of a chance against Oswalt. The Reds don't have much of a chance with Milton pitching. Those are two possible loses. Switch Milton and Lohse and maybe we'll have a better shot tomorrow.

You may be right.

While Oswalt seams to be all world against us, he's claerly not the ACe he once was. His K's are declining, and he's more hittable than he used to be. We beat him, I believe, for the first time last year.

Let's continue that.

Marc D
05-02-2007, 06:04 PM
I think Milton has hit that magic point where he starts to take some severe beatings. You could see the decline in what little stuff he has in the last outing and he was lucky to escape with only 3 Runs imo.

It a degenerative thing and I think he's already used up the few decent outings he has left in him. You can literally see when he's going into pitching machine mode(unless your initials are JN), hope I'm wrong but I thought I saw it in his last start.

05-02-2007, 06:47 PM
The key tonight is going to be Oswalt's control, he already has 17 BB this year in 40 innings, hopefully the reds stay patient and make him throw strikes

Hopefully Gonzalez will stay hot tonight too, he has pretty good numbers against Oswalt for a right handed batter

I don't understand why they don't pitch Milton tonight.

You don't just throw in the towel everytime you don't have a good pitching matchup. That's why you play the games. Besides, what kind of message would that send to the rest of the team?

Don't think of it as throwing in the towl. Think of it more as micro managaing of sorts.

I think Lohse is very capable of handling this Astros lineup. I like the fact that they moved Oswalt up a day, at least with Lohse we have a chance of staying in the game even if the offense doesn't get it going against Oswalt.

If that is the case, about being uncomfortable, then the pitchers should let Ross call the pitches from the Dugout, like some managers do

But its not necessarily just pitch calling. For all we know Narron calls all the pitches from the dugout for both Ross and Javy. But it's also how you set up behind the plate, what kind of target you give, how you frame pitches, when you go out and talk to the pitcher, setting the hitter up inside or outside, what kind of an arm the catcher has, etc. If it was as easy as letting the dugout call pitches, you and I could catch. There's a reason Ross keeps getting starts over Javy even though he's not even hitting his weight.

He's probably going to be most successful sticking with the heater and slider and using the change and curve sparingly (especially the curve). As I heard Curt Schilling, who's all fastball and slider, explain once, "I've got two quality pitches so that's what I throw."

It's a little different when you're facing Roy Oswalt rather than that kid HOU put out there last night. The Reds made him throw 50-60 pitches in 2 innings last night. You know a guy like Oswalt is going to be around the plate all night. You see a pitch you like, even if it's the forst pitch, and you go after it because you may not ever see that pitch again. Plate patience is a great thing to have. But let's not go overboard on it.

The "yellow line" thing annoys me to no end. GG keeps saying "the ball has to hit above the yellow line to be a homer", which is silly. There is no part of the wall above the line. The ball has the clear the wall to be a homer, just like it does at every major league park. The yellow line just makes the top of the wall easier to distinguish.
