Looks like a pretty balanced lineup today for the reds

Hopefully arroyo can get some run support as well

I like Jerry giving BP a day off here.

My ideal situation for freel - Every week he give EE, BP, JR and Hamilton a day off. 4 starts a week right there. Maybe give Jr. or Hamilton 2 days off a week. But 4 to 5 starts a week is good for freel, and good for keeping every one else fresh.

I've loved this idea for a long time. Keeps everyone fresh and also keeps everyone getting ABs. I'd probably throw Dunn in there, too. Probably even before I'd throw BP in there.

Agreed.

I had a feeling Jerry might put Freel at 2nd today. Not alot to complain about with this lineup (which probably means we will get shutout), except I'd like to see Hamilton hitting a bit higher.

1. You can't hit Josh 4th and have 4 lefties in a row.
2. I don't care how they started this year, Edwin's a much better hitter then Seabass.

I don't disagree, but Dunn will start 160 games a year, barring injury. He doesn't play with crazy motor, so he doesn't need a lot of rest. The off days are plenty for him. He's the big run producer, and as much as he SHOULD get a night or two off if he's slumping or being lazy at the plate, he won't often.

Point taken on the L-R distribution. Vast oversight on my part.

To say that EdE's any where near the type of hitter Josh Hamilton is, however, is terribly wishful thinking. Josh is a former first overall pick. EdE is just some dude we acquired in as part of a package deal for Rob Bell.

Not trying to say that EdE might not someday be an average (or slightly above average) major league hitter. But there are only so many Josh Hamiltons roaming the bigs. You can't just find that kind of player anywhere. And to say that he's not as good Edwin Encarnacion is a ridiculous insult.

Someday Edwin Encarnacion can be an average to above average hitter? SOMEDAY?

You're telling me he wasn't an above average hitter last year in his first full season in the big leagues? Leading the team in doubles in only 112 games doesn't tell you he can be a really good player?

He's not as good as Edwin is right now. He hasn't proven he is. Edwin has been up an produced in the bigs. Josh Hamilton hasn't done that for any extended period of time.

I think Hamilton and Edwin can be HUGE parts of the Reds organization for a long time.

And lets not forget, Edwin (24) is actually 2 years younger the Hamilton (26).

Hamilton has all sorts of potential, to be sure, but at this stage I bet that GM's would give EE quite a bit more trade value.

And being the first overall pick is pretty useless once the game starts.

Slump aside, EE is already at least an average major league hitter.

Hamilton actually won't turn 26 until later this month. The age gap is about a year and half...the gap in potential, however, is about a lightyear and half. (And BTW, EdE played in 117 games last year, not sure where you're getting your info??)

I'm not saying Edwin isn't a good player, and I agree that he (if he learns to throw a ball to firstbase) and Josh will be big parts of this organization for 5-10 years.

But to say he's a better player than Josh right now?? That's insane and I think most Zoners would agree. Forget the fancy doubles stat from last year (rookie season) and look at the other categories--they indicate that he was about an average player.

I think when we get to the end of this year, Josh's rookie season, we're going to be seeing some far more significant numbers. He's a guy that's going to be not good, but great in this league for a long time to come.

Which team did he "lead" again? Oh yeah, that team that finished below .500 right in the middle of one of the league's worst divisions. Who cares about "leading" statistical categories? That's comparing apples to oranges. If you want to prove EdE is better than Josh, compare EdE to Josh--not EdE to the 2006 Reds and Josh to nothing.

As for the 1B thing, I wouldn't be opposed if we didn't have Votto coming up. He's struggling right now, but I think he'll come around. Griffey Sr. told me two springs ago that he thought Votto was the best hitting prospect in the organization.

Since he had no major league service time when the Reds picked him up, they own him for a long time.. It's going to be 3 years before he's eligible for arbitration, and then another 3 years until free agency..

So the club has his rights for 6 years (including this one).

I agree 100%. They can't expect Dunn to be an RBI guy when they put a crappy hitter behind Dunn.. Any pitcher with common sense will always pitch around Dunn with runners on base in a situation like that.. The result is that Dunn will either walk or K 90% of the time. That's not a slam on Dunn.. the vast majority of the time, he does walk when pitched around.. The point is that Dunn gets zilch to hit in a situation like that.

Go ahead and compare their stats from T-Ball to now and Hamilton is simply better. But don't just pick out a year that Josh didn't play and that EdE did and try to say "Well, EdE's whopping .276 AVG is better than Josh's since he didn't play in the bigs that year. I guess that means he's a better player."

Why don't you ask Krivsky who he'd rather have? Or, better yet, a non-Reds fan, non-partial source? Guaranteed if you ask Buster Olney, he'd say hang on to The Natural!
