Freel 3B
Hatteberg 1B

Phillips 2B

I have stayed away from batting order bashing but against Oswalt and a team with only one lefty in the pen(who Dunn and Jr hammered last week) it makes no sense at all.

I just don't get the fascination with phillips in the middle of the order.

He has a live bat with some pop?

He is going to try to put the ball in play no matter what?

Always swinging?

Does he come up with the big hit?

At the least he has moved Alex G back down to 7th against Oswalt. I don't really have a huge problem with this line-up. Against Oswalt, Phillips and Alex G are facing tough nights, other than burying them at 7th and 8th, not sure what you do other than what Narron has done.

This game will turn on whether Hatte, Jr., Hamilton, Dunn or Valentin can do some harm from the left side against Oswalt...

I hear you, flyer, but since we know that Narron is in a split-the-bats-as-much-as-possible mode, I am fine with what he has fashioned for the night. Given that constraint (L-R-L-R as much as possible), I am ok with the line-up...

I am also not as down on Phillips as many on here seem to be (although I agree that clean-up is a bit of a stretch for him...)

Again, since Narron is in a split-the-bats mode, who would you bat clean-up from amongst his choices? Set aside for the moment whether you agree with his doing that or not (splitting the bats), and, given that reality, how else would you do it?

Kc61

All this discussion shows is that the Reds lack a true righty middle of the order guy. I guess EE sits because Narron doesn't think he can hit Oswalt right now. And Freel is hot so he keeps him in .

Even with EE, I don't see a Derrick Lee in this lineup.

This is a problem the Reds need to correct. You have to have one righty bopper among these lefty bats.

flyer85
05-07-2007, 03:52 PM
Again, since Narron is in a split-the-bats modewhich just shows how dense he is.

A) The Astros have one lefty in the pen
B) The LHP, Miller, isn't very good and the LHBs beat him around last week
C) Oswalt is pitching and the likelihood of anyone pitching other than setup or closer is rather small anyway.

This just really isn't all that hard.

Freel
Hatty
Jr
Hamilton
Dunn
Phillips
Gonzo
Valentin

You have to have one righty bopper among these lefty bats.... at least against teams that have good LHPs in the bullpen. The Astros do NOT qualify.

The odds are rather good it will be all RHPs for the Stros tonight.

One of the games against Philly (4.22 perhaps?) It seemed like they had 7 lefties in the line up. It was wild because we were in our fav section (220ish) which is foul ball heaven from lefties.

But I wonder if the managers who insist on lefty/right splits would melt down if they had to run out such a lefty heavy line up?

membengal
05-07-2007, 03:56 PM
That's a fine line-up flyer, and my preferred one as well. But, since yelling into the wind will have the same effect in terms of changing Narron's current insistence on "splitting the bats" as will my opinion on this board of his order, I guess I am just working over in my mind within those constraints what else he could have done. Given the current approach from Narron, the line-up that he has tonite makes about as much sense as it can. Faint praise and all that...

BRM

B) The LHP, Miller, isn't very good and the LHBs beat him around last week

Lefties have hit Miller better than righties this season. Both sides hit him at about the same rate in 2005 and 2006. There is ZERO reason to split up the lefties against the Astros tonight.

In connection with Johny Fay's article posted on ORG, I have to say the only change I'd make in this lineup would be starting Ross instead of Valentin.

For whatever reason, the pitchers just look better with Ross behind the plate.

I wonder if Narron will eventually figure out that Hatteberg doesn't hit well in the #2 spot. He was terrible there last year and he's "raking" to the tune of a .695 OPS there this year, albeit a small sample size for 2007 (25 PA's).

24 different lineups in 32 games.

BRM

From the #2 spot.

2006 numbers

Dunn: .317/.417/.593 (139 plate appearances)
Hat: .215/.322/.292 (151 plate appearances)
Phillips: .188/.224/.188 (66 plate appearances)

2007 numbers

Dunn: .316/.519/.842 (27 plate appearances)
Hat: .292/.320/.375 (25 plate appearances)
Phillips: .269/.310/.403 (71 plate appearances)
Hamilton: .333/.429/.583 (14 plate appearances)

Phillips and Hatteberg showed they weren't 2 hole hitters last year and they are continuing that trend so far this year.

Freel .280 BA, .840 OPS vs Oswalt

I think it can be a bit dangerous to look at historicals. Phillips has only seen him for 13 ab's...w/ 4 hits. If he goes 2-4 w/ an EB tonight he'll 'own' him.

Griff is a bit of a concern...but with him swinging a hot stick I'd disregard 30 career ab's pretty quickly.
Griff's bat has been about as good for the last two weeks as it has been for any stretch as a Red. Lots of walks, few K's, lots of hitting.

Word to the wise: Take pitches! Get Oswalt to throw as much as possible and then get him out earlier.

The problem with that stategy is that Oswalt throws strikes. If you take too many pitches (for the sake of taking them) you make him a much better pitcher.

That's why guys like Phillips and Gonzo have some success against him. The are up hacking at strikes.

I'm all for taking pitches, but you can't simply let a control artist like Oswalt continually get ahead of you.

QUESTION:

Five days ago, it was inferred here that Lohse was trying to match pitch-for-pitch with Oswalt and wasn't being himself. Then after the coach or Narron spoke to him, he settled in and pitched well. It didn't result in a win, but I think this time do you think we can expect Lohse to give us as good of an outing as Oswalt gives Houston? I think we can.

Yeah, the 2nd effort was maybe a little over the top, in terms of literally diving in Superman style and the very slim shot he had at making the catch. I'm not sure if Freel can just turn off his style that easily however. When the ball is hit, its harder to say, "no thanks on that one" than debating after the play.
