The home run by Ken Griffey Jr. to leadoff the 12th inning and the 1-2-3 bottom of the 12th by David Weathers gave the 2007 REDS a last AB victory. That was only their 2nd last AB win of the year after 40 games. By way of comparison after 40 games...
2003: 10 last AB wins.
2004: 4 last AB wins.
2005: 3 last AB wins.
2006: 5 last AB wins.
Of course only having a total of 16 wins in the first 40 games doesn't help the chances of last AB wins.
2003 was definitely a cardiac-kid-thing for the REDS in the first 40 games. They had a 21-19 record after 40 games and 47.6% of those wins came in the last at-bat. They had as many last AB wins after 40 games in 2003 as the years 2005, 2006 and 2007 combined. Eight of those ten last AB wins came in the brand new GABP and helped bring excitement to a brand new stadium. Do you remember the back-to-back walkoff wins agianst the dreaded Cardinals on May 5-6 that year? Aaron Boone hit a leadoff HR in the bottom of the 9th to win the May 5 game, 5-4. Then Barry Larkin came off the DL to hit a PH 2-run HR in the bottom of the 9th the following night to win the game 6-5 for the REDS.
The other last AB win this season? April 20 vs. Phillies. Scott Hatteberg hit a solo HR w/ 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game at 1-1. Then Brandon Phillips hit a bases loaded single with 1 out in the 10th for the win.
I'll take wins anyway the REDS can get 'em. But those last at-bat ones are exciting.
