Oh how I love seeing out machines at the top of the lineup.

I think it's pretty clear by now that Jerry constructs his lineups to adapt to imaginary situations he doesn't want the team to fail in rather than to maximize the opportunities for his best players. Over the long haul it's going to cost the Reds some runs.

Comedy of errors out there. Bronson pitching his worst against one of the least effective offense he's faced, and the defense consistently stumbling and misfiring behind him. Cyclone792
05-21-2007, 07:28 PM
Arroyo's missing his spots bad so far tonight in the first inning, and he's either leaving balls right in the meat of the plate just begging to get crushed or he's missing the strike zone altogether by a ton. He's going to have to start hitting his spots a bit better otherwise he'll be out of the game before we know it.

Also, I hate to say it, but this is Arroyo's first start after that ridiculous game in which Narron let him throw 129 pitches. I don't want to immediately jump to conclusions and blame that high pitch count during his last start for his problems tonight, but it really does make me wonder ...

Not to mention, he threw 117 pitches in the previous start in a mere 6IP versus the Dodgers (and 120 in the start preceding that vs COL). He's really been pushed to the limit and, whether that toll is starting to manifest itself tonight or not, he clearly is having difficulty locating all 3 of his primary pitches so far. Precisely, and my fear is not only the risk of Arroyo breaking down this summer but the potential for Arroyo breaking down in future seasons and/or suffering some sort of an injury. Arroyo is #1 in BP's Pitcher Abuse Points and #1 in their "stress" ranking. Aaron Harang is #2 in BP's Pitcher Abuse Points and #3 in the stress ranking (Zito is #3 in Pitcher Abuse and #2 in stress).

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/sortable/index.php?cid=204015

That's a great point. Obviously, the long-term effects of such potential abuse to our only two top of the rotation starters, far outweighs what it will mean in the short-term for a team destined to finish light years out of contention. I almost worry less about the detriment to Arroyo's health, as the fluidity of his motion would seem to exert less effort than Harang's (but that may be offset by the higher percentage of offspeed pitches B.A. throws).

Regardless, Narron shouldn't be allowed to ride our 1 and 1A pitchers into the ground, simply because our bullpen is ineffectual, and because he feels that their starts are 'must wins.' There's too much invested in them for the future, to risk them flaming out in 2007.

True, VR. I'm not overly fond of the turnover in personnel, and philosophy, which have led to a much more free-swinging team in terms of plate approach. Make a guy who struggles with his control work, and come into the zone in favorable counts.

I'll add that Narron NEVER gives them the extra day when there is a day off.
Saarloos was ready to pitch on Sunday...but no, Narron had to move Harang (and Arroyo) up. Sure..they're better...but it messes up everyone else in the rotation.

I find it greedy (like moving "hot" hitters up in the lineup...say Gonzo?).

Interesting. I just browsed through the list - Lohse listed at 42 and Belisle at 100. Seems kind of high to have 4 pitchers on the list - especially for a last place club.
