Somewhere along the line, Phillips slipped into the cleanup spot and some of us accepted it.

Sorry, I can't. I think cleanup and visions of Gehrig, Snider, Perez, Stargell, etc..enter my mind.

Phillips...no.

Yeah, I guess I've forced myself to accept BP hitting 4th. I don't like it either but Narron isn't going to change anytime soon. He's always going to feel the need to split up Junior and Dunn. Hopefully EE starts raking and gets put back in the 4 slot soon enough.

No, but rather optimistic.

Put Hamilton in for Freel. Move Phillips to the second slot. Make Derrick Lee the cleanup hitter/first baseman. A starting pitcher below 4.00.

Then we're talking.

A RH hitter like Lee who was tall and could pick it at 1B would really help this team.

Well, I meant given the current personnel, I don't mind it so much. Although I would like to see Phillips moved out of the cleanup spot at some point.

Ah, but there's a flaw with mixing Jerry Narron and Lou Gehrig together in a Yankees lineup. Babe Ruth batted 3rd, which means if Jerry Narron was managing those Yankees teams Lou Gehrig would have been batting 5th rather than 4th. Narron can't have those lefties Ruth and Gehrig batting back to back now. In Jerry Narron's world, Tony Lazzeri or Bob Meusel would have been batting 4th rather than Lou Gehrig.

Two differences perhaps?

In the past era, you didn't have the liklihood of a LOOGY coming in, as the starter generally went quite a long time.

Ruth and Gehrig presumably hit lefties well. Both Griffey and Dunn have had troubles with them (at times) over the last few years.

I like A RH hitter between them too, so I put Dunn 2nd, and Griffey 4th.

How about this lineup, then? (Jerry has the right personnel, just needs a few minor tweaks to the order, IMO):

Freel cf
Dunn lf
Phillips 2b
Griffey rf
Encarnacion 3b
Hatteberg 1b
Gonzalez ss
Ross c
Lohse p

Personally, I don't mind Griffey and Dunn back-to-back, especially the way Junior is swinging the bat. My optimum lineup would be:

Freel cf
Phillips 2b
Griffey rf
Dunn lf
Encarnacion 3b
Hatteberg 1b
Gonzalez ss
Ross c
Lohse p

I thought Lohse was sick?

I think Ross would be much better suited in the 5 or 6 hole....where his slugging potential could be maximized. He's OPS'd .800 for May, including 1.362 the last 8 games. Give him a bit of protection...let him see some better pitches.

Gonzo is much better suited for the 8 spot.

Johnny Bench would probably bat 8th now... :)

Amazing how it always comes down to starting pitching in baseball. After a good start, the rotation has fallen apart. Even Harang has been ordinary so far. Lohse, forget it. Belisle -- not helping lately. Milton -- need I say more. Won't criticize Saarloos, he just started, and Arroyo was entitled to the bad outing last time -- he's been good.

Can't remember the last time a starter pitched a good game, maybe the Arroyo game when he threw about 150 pitches and lost at the end.

This winter, many of us thought the Reds needed to pick up another good starter. We were wrong. They needed three.

Can't remember the last time a starter pitched a good game, maybe the Arroyo game when he threw about 150 pitches and lost at the end.

This winter, many of us thought the Reds needed to pick up another good starter. We were wrong. They needed three.

Nice revisionist history. Two other people and I thought we needed starters--everyone else laughed and said we were fine.

How long will the fan base put up with Narron and Krivsky? Castellini?

Yes, they don't bat and throw, but Krivsky put this mess together with the advice of Narron (if it goes like it usually does) and Narron picked these guys--so you can't say he has nothing to work with. Ross' defense has been good, which is the most important thing for a catcher....I'd take Gonzo over Lopez, Clayon, or whomever else has played there recently, I think Hopper was here before (I may be wrong, I'm not sure where he came from), my biggest beef with Conine is batting him 4th (which isn't his fault), Moeller...pretty much taking up a roster spot from a hitter, Hamilton...come on, if he pans out, it's the steal of the century (maybe not century), if he doesn't, he didn't cost them much (in baseball terms), Castro......his glove isn't what it was a few years ago. I liked him better in his first go-around here.

It always kills me when the announcers go ballistic over a missed play every time multiple players are running for the ball because it probably happens about 95% of the time (I'm just guessing; didn't look it up).

And, IMHO, the reason it happens is because neither calls for the ball (from EE's reaction, I don't think he even knew Gonzo was there), or someone calls for the ball but isn't heard because of the crowd noise, or they both hold off at the last second to avoid a collison... which is the wise thing to do in my opinion.

Sorry, but Lohse was meant to give the Reds another arm last summer to haul in some innings, which he did for little price.

These moves are made all the time. Krivsky has many worse sins than Lohse last year(such as KEEPING Lohse this year). We all know his MO in full season situations. A few bad starts, then a couple of good starts. Pretty simple. Krivsky's fetish didn't allow the deal to end as it should of, but that is Wayne's problem. The deal when made, was a typical mid-season move.

This is so disappointing, and to me, it could have been avoided. Why bring Stanton in AGAIN tonight.

And you wonder why the team is depressed?

Hit a 3 run double off Stanton.

So happy there is another 2 years on his contract. Next year we can enjoy his $5 million, Stanton's $2-3 million, Castro's $1 million and Ross' $2 million and change.

It's like Milton only spread across 4 roster spots.

The only intrigue left in this season is Homer, Votto, Edwin and possibly Bruce for a couple weeks in September(provided he does well in AA.)

that where the "payflex" from the trade went

Exactly. Thank God they saved that money.

He ended Stanton's career as a Red. $20 says he goes on the DL within the next 3 days.

I'd prefer 3 minutes

Stanton looks like that dude that wakes up after the 'big party' hung over looking for the juice. You want to tell him to get the heck out and begin a new day, but he sits down on the sofa and looks for the remote.

The WORST team in baseball in the standings.

Wish Stormy would chime in with his opinion. I see you...

1.) It's great to see you, WV. :beerme:

2.) I wish this team would give fans something of positive substance to discuss. The flaws are pandemic, and undermine each facet of the team. Aside from a few promising prospects on the nearing horizon, 2-3 young position players on the MLB roster, and 2 struggling front of the rotation starters... I'm not even sure where you begin the process of rebuilding this team. Moreover, with his trade evaluations, and bullpen/bench constructs, I'm not in favor of Krivsky being the guy to deal away key pieces in the process of obtaining rebuilding materials.

I want to reiterate that Marty is REALLY toned down tonight. It's kind of freaking me out, to be honest. If Thom was in the booth with him for this game I think I would have heard a pop as Marty exploded in frustration by this point.

well if they were then they are dumber than I thought. He gave them a little more than what could have been reasonably expected.

The deal itself was fine in the present of 2006, but extending him onward to 2007 was stupid.

If I was Cast, I would ask around if firing Krivsky would cause much of a backlash. He looks like he is overwhelmed. The mis-management has been piling up on him for a year now.

I don't want to carry this on any more than necessary, but seriously? He was a disaster in September.

From 8/23 to 9/23 his ERA rose from 5.44 to 6.04. At that stage of the season that's pretty tough to do. Unless they were looking for slightly better than Milton, they were disappointed.

He started out well but collapsed down the stretch, along with most of the team.
