Castro? Shouldn't we at least put it up for a vote? I was gonna vote for Todd Coffey myself.

Should've made a poll before making this thread. My vote would definetly go to Narron

Can the whipping boy be a non-player? I wasn't aware that there was precedent for that. The manager is a de facto whipping boy whenever the team is losing... so that doesn't make it much of a distinction.

if they can be non-players you have to throw george grande in the mix. but my vote goes to todd coffey.

Well there are a few good reasons not to like him, I don't think there's a reason to "hate" him though.

I cannot grasp just how bad Juan Castro is. He has a .389 OPS. There are 24 MLB players with higher on-base percentages. How in world is it possible for this man to even be on an MLB roster? Heck, not only is on a roster, he has a two year contract.

I guess perception of good defense can get you a long way in some organizations. Unfortunately, I root for one of those organizations.

You're right, and he has had some high-profile blow-ups...

...but Coffey's ERA in May is 3.18. That's not bad, and it's almost the best in the pen for this month. I think he was sent down five weeks too late. He had turned it around, then had a bad outing and was sent out.

I can't get minorleaguebaseball.com to load, for some reason, so I can't find Coffey's stats at Louisville.

Okay, the site finally loaded, and a couple of kind RZ members were kind enough to send me the stats, as well.

Coffey has pitched three times in AAA, and hasn't allowed a run.

I think he needs to be in Cincinnati.

How can we ignore Stanton and his 2 year deal?

Yeah, I vote for Stanton.

Yes sent down way too late, On the point of Castro, time for him to become a coach, I am sure there are other slick glove men who are younger and have a little more range. Stanton.....oh boy... don't even get me started, he should not be in a Reds uniform period.

Time for this teams front office to start making decisions, either go younger, or go home, it's better to burn out, then it is to fade away. We restlessly state Homer should be pitching here, while others argue that it's way too early. Well I look at Glavine and Maddux and see there stats early in their career. Sometimes baptism by fire is a good thing.

I vote for Juan Castro.

His line is now down to .143/.169/.179 for an OPS of only .348 over the first two months of the season and 56 ABs. He has only 2 walks and 14 Ks in those at bats, and he will be 35 years old in a few weeks.

With runners on base, he is hitting even worse than his line suggests. With runners on base, he is batting .074. With RISP, he is hitting .118.

If we really need a pinch hitter of this caliber we would be better off using Lyle Lohse (.263/.300/.263) or Aaron Harang (.154/.148.154)

Keppinger is a better hitter this year (small sample) .250/.333./250 for an OPS of .583. Keppinger was a poor replacement for EE, but is a big upgrade from Castro.

I realize that Castro has a two year contract. However, I personally won't believe the Reds are serious about contending until I see Juan Castro DFA'd. He is simply a drain on the Reds every time he comes up, and has no business being on the Reds 40 man roster, let alone the 25 man roster. To use him as a pinch hitter is simply crazy.
