Reds Rocks 6.1

DENVER -- Welcome to lovely Coors Field. A nice little walk from the hotel to here. And, well, nothing much of note yet. Will get you the lineups when I get them. Other than that, not too much. Larry Herms said the appeal on Adam Dunn's caught stealing was denied. Herms said he appealed twice. He was denied twice. Well, let's just say Herms has been denied more than twice, but just twice by the official scorer in Houston.

No wireless signal in the clubhouse, so sorry it took a little longer for the lineup

Hopper 8
Hatteberg 3
Griffey 9
Phillips 4
Dunn 7
Gonzalez 6
EE 5
Javy 2
Livingston 1

Colorado Rockies

Taveras 8
Tulowitzki 6
Holliday 7
Helton 3
Baker 5
Hawpe 9
Torrealba 2

Now for my daily rant....

Overall, not the worst possible lineup. I'm OK with Hopper leading off while he is hot (he reached base nine times in the three games at Houston). I am starting to come around to the thinking that it doesn't matter if the three lefties hit consecutively--they are three of our most productive hitters. (I'm OK with two of them back-to-back, and I would prefer that they be Griffey-Dunn, but I have resisted all three hitting in order.) I still like Hatteberg in the #6 spot, though--I think it is his best spot. But with Phillips seeming to struggle a little bit, I think he would be best served to move down a little. My lineup for tonight would be:

Hopper cf
Hatteberg 1b
Griffey rf
Dunn lf
Encarnacion 3b
Phillips 2b
Gonzalez ss
Valentin c
Livingston p

Nope, Narron logic says if a player is doing well in a low spot, leave him there.

Good Lineup. Separating Hatteberg from another lefty should be unnecessary, even in Narron's lefty-splitting world, since he is part of a platoon (Conine?)

I still like Gonzo 8th, reason being if he gets on before the pitcher...gets bunted over he can actually score from second on a single.

Additionally, since your catchers are also your potential pinch hitters, its makes some sense to separate the catchers from the pitchers spot (for those wonderful double switches).

And that was MY daily rant....

as for Narron's lineup :barf:

I agree, except that I don't think you will ever see Conine hit for Hatteberg (or Hatteberg hit for Conine). You don't want to use your best bat on the bench to hit for a competent player. The platoon simply determines who starts.

I like it! It is a good conversation piece especially since this season went south so quickly. I'm sorry your first year as a fan was 1982. That was the most brutal season I can remember and I go back 36 years. That was the first time I had to put up with a really bad Reds team. Bench at third was equal to a statue. He couldn't move after all those season of catching. That was brutal watching that too. He should have played 1b and maybe he would have played more seasons. He could still hit well when he hung it up after the 83 season.

I was a Reds fan from the time I was five years old, in 1975. (Well, actually, I was a Pete Rose and Johnny Bench fan.) But I didn't really understand baseball then. I had my baseball epiphany during the 1979 World Series, and was truly a Reds fane in 1980. But I didn't consider myself a full-fledged fan until I actually attended my first game, which was Opening Day, 1982.

I thought that the Reds should have either:

1) Traded Dan Driessen for OF help (Cesar Cedeño) instead of Ray Knight, especially since the Astros moved Knight to 1B. This would have opened 1B for Bench.

2) Kept both Driessen and Knight, and moved Bench to LF. I have seen Kal Daniels and Adam Dunn play LF. Bench could have at least performed to their level.

1981 was the year my wife and I got married. She was from Missouri and the Reds and Cardinals had the two best records for the whole season and neither made the playoffs. We got married the day before the end of the season. I remember watching one of the playoff games from our little honeymoon cottage in New Hampshire, but it should have been the Reds and the Cardinals!

I agree Livingston has been fine...if you left him in...its because you want him in...not to pull him after a bloop single.
