Y'know, except for the presence of Castro, that is a lineup that does NOT make me want to puke.

I will amend my statement. Griffey must have really needed two days off.

So, yesterday didn't count as a day off???

Not really. I'm sure they didn't get home until late sunday night/ early monday morning. The Reds really shouldn't expect to get more than 130 games or so out of Griffey anyway.

PuffyPig
06-05-2007, 06:18 PM
GRiffey's been needing a day off for some time. The last 2 times he's been scheduled to take a day off, they've had to play him becsue of other's injuries.

Giving him 2 days off might mean he'll go back to being the hitter he was for most of May.

He's looked a little sluggish out there lately.

Castro at SS? yikes.

Gonzalez is hurt IIRC. Hopefully he's not out long. If he had to go on the DL I'd rather see Janish up here.

Patrick Bateman
06-05-2007, 06:38 PM
This is why Gonzalez is so vastly important. It's the one position where if he gets injured we have absolutely zero depth.

Plus, a .837 OPSing SS with reasonably good defense doesn't grow on trees.

Now for my nightly rant...oops, actually a lineup that I agree with! Griffey has needed a day off, and with Hamilton back and Hopper on a hot streak, now is the perfect time to do it. Gonzalez is a little gimpy, so Castro starting at SS is not unexpected. I like that Ross has moved up to the #7 spot with Castro hitting #8.

Plus, a .837 OPSing SS with reasonably good defense doesn't grow on trees.

And who exactly has a SS who OPS's .837??

I assume you are talking about Alex Gonzalez, cause thats his OPS after just over 200 at bats this year. However, thats one-third of a season AND considering his highest OPS in any year prior to this year was .758 and since he's only been over .700 twice, yup twice, in his 9 + year career I think we can assume its not staying at .837 for the year.

So you are absolutely right - they don't grow on trees. And the Reds don't have that tree. They barely have that branch. Marathon, not a sprint. Marathon.

I can see the Cards getting it together, but gaining the division title in the next 25 days is a mathematical near impossibility. Among other things, the Brewers have a cupcake schedule from here to the All-Star break.

Bottom of the 2nd inning:

Encarnacion singles.

Wellemeyer SO (2-2 count, though I'm not sure that count was right after a whole lot of confusion regarding the signs). 2 outs.

Never underestimate the Cards; never overestimate the Brewers.

Last year you were on the Brewers bandwagon, saying how great they were.....blah blah blah.

I think the Brewers will win the Central, but not because they're any good....they're just so far ahead and no team in this Division will be able to play well enough to catch them.

Yeah, that's my take on it. When the Brew Crew has faced real competition they've sucked this season.

Further, they've had chances to run away and hide from the Cards when they've been getting no production from Pujols and Rolen. That won't last forever. Wainwright will come around, Carpenter could come back this season, Looper's been your typical Dave Duncan revelation. They can get it done. If they stay healthy, they probably will.

I figure Cordero can get them through the season, particularly since they're looking at a cakewalk into the playoffs. Wouldn't trust him much in October though.

Capuano and Suppan give that team stability beyond Sheets. Bush will pitch better. Vargas is pretty stable for a #5 guy.

Interesting sidelight, they've got Grant Balfour looking pretty good in AAA and he might be a solid contributor in their bullpen by the end of the month (as the Reds ironically attempt to sort out their bully).

Anyway, it's full-on ridiculous that they've come up with an IF of Fielder, Weeks, Hardy and Braun, all 24 and younger.

Its the Ross, Castro, Pitcher part of the lineup with men on and no outs again.

You load the bases with nobody out, and then get to watch it nullified by Castro and the pitcher. I'd actually expect Harang to be more likely to deliver the clutch hit than Castro in this situation.

Too close to look at Juan, with the pitcher on deck for #$#$ sake. By the way, this is the worst Cardinals' team (and rotation) I've seen in 12-13 years, at least. They are old, and unproductive, with little hope of future improvement at most positions anywhere on the immediate horizon. They need to be glad they peaked during the playoffs last year, as they are likely finished for a while (despite a fantastic ownership, GM, and coaching staff dynamic).

Right. The Brewers are the class of this division, and potentially a force for the future. However, that will likely only be good enough to get booted early by the superior experience of the teams in the NL East or NL West.

FCB almost had this right, he was just a year early in predicting the demise of the Cards (who then burned that prediction in W.S. fashion), and then bailed out a year early from being ahead of the curve in heralding the ascent of the Brewers. Otherwise, he was actually pretty much on the trends of these franchises.
