If you look at it the pitching motion is a violent motion in itself. There are reasons why starting pitchers normally pitch on every 5th day. Whenever you subject your arm to that type of unusual stress injuries happen.

Starters used to pitch every forth day and go 8 or 9 innings on a regular basis years ago. Were there all the injuries then? Has the pitching motion changed over the years or were they just not throwing as hard? Or were they not throwing near as many breaking pitches and just sticking with fastballs?

I have always been of the opinion that those type of pitchers from yesteryear would get slaughtered in todays MLB. I think todays players are quite a bit better all around than the players from 50 years ago, save a few Hall of Famers.
